Lo and behold, screenshots of Microsoft’s upcoming web analytics application Gatineau are surfacing on the web along with an interview with Microsoft’s Ian Thomas about the application.

Following on the footsteps of Google Analytics, we have another large player with what looks to be a powerful and free web analytics application. It looks like it will have a heavy focus on ecommerce and demographic segmentation which is important since the goals of these free analytics apps are to get the AdCenter and Adwords advertisers to spend more money on their ad platforms. Like Google Analytics, Gatineau can be used on it’s own without being an AdCenter advertiser.

The beta invites are supposedly going out next month, sign up here if you’d like to get in line. Sign Up here

If they can leverage all that demographic data from Hotmail and other services of theirs, they can finally start being a real competitor to Google.

Yes, names are not Microsoft's strongest point!

Microsoft Attorney Aaron Kornblum says fines for cybersquatting could go as high as $100,000 per domain name.

There are many nice names available with Microsoft since they are TM.

Microsoft can B**ch slap a domainer with the max fine and not think twice about it. http://www.insideindianabusiness.com/newsitem.asp?ID=25423

___Great Screen shots for Microsoft Gatineau, I use Adcenter and am looking forward to this.

I hope this confirms my assumption that they'll be naming the actual product something else :)

Where did they come up with the name Gatineau? D-:

I like the looks of it better than Google Analytics though. Looks like it will integrate the nice drop and drag feature using ajax that windows live mail has. ;)

gatineau is actually a geo name. A BIG geo name. Thats why it has over 5 million google search results.

I just checked for typos of Gatineau.com (there have to be TONS of them for such a name), and people have actually regged some. From what I've heard about MS's anti cybersquatter policy, that could mean trouble for a lot of people.

I'm just wondering, though. Could someone get away with a typo of Gatineau since it also happens to be a fairly popular geo domain?

If the name stays it will ensure continuity of employment for a few more IP lawyers.

Yeah Gatineau is a city in Quebec with, well, a lot people living in. Not sure it is related to their choice, not at all.

if this works as well as they've planned it, then it is quite impressive and gives them an edge. this in combination with a revamped live search and whatever else they have it the works reaffirms their presence on the internet. well done, microsoft.

btw gatineau is only the codename, so it might change to something else when it's fully launched.

It will change, it has to.

And for the record, I have nothing against the good citizens of Gatineau (but I did have to look up the spelling just now).

I'm wondering why they named it Gatineau too. I am sure this is a beautiful place to live for it's inhabitants but other than that.., what attracted Microsoft to it? The only thing that I see remotely meaningful is related to Gatineau river. Which was termed..,originally

<"Te-nagàdino-zìbi", which means "The River that Stops [One's Journey]".>
by the Algonquins later renamed by the furtrader named Gatineau.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gatineau_River

Maybe the " the river that stops one's journey" is what Microsoft is getting at.
Anyways this name has become a riddle of sorts for me. And bugs me like an item
that i've forgottn on a grocery list.., if someone has light bulb moment and can think of the reasons. Pls post.

I dont think they really care as they havent ever used such kind of domains for their services. And if someone would really try to take this ride they could easily acquire it.

Wonder no longer d'x, the riddle is solved.

Once upon a time there was a company called DeepMetrix Corporation.

It lived in a country called Canada, in a city called Gatineau.

It made very good analytics software, but it felt lonely in Gatineau.

One day it went to the market and met a rich company called Microsoft Corporation.

Yada yada yada, they lived happily thereafter and gave away their analytics software to the poor (which Microsoft reckoned included anyone who had net assets of less than $60,000,000,000).

The end

Thanx for solving the riddle Mobi Cheap.
That was it? no drum rolls, suspense and Wordoku'ness to the name.
Darn, I was hoping they'd hv some hidden symbolism behind it. :)

Sorry d'x, I wasn't sure myself if it was a good idea to disappoint you with such a prosaic origin of the missing link, since I did like "the river that stops one's journey" theory much better.

That's Microsoft for you, sometimes they make great products but don't expect too much subtle symbolism from a company headed by a guy who likes to do this to his employees:

And a note to MTLD if I may: See guys, we all told you we need some .mobi awareness ads, right?

LOL.., fun footage. Sorry for the spelling bloopers. It just so happens I've been regging
movie/cinema/film related domains today-actually thinking about them for the past few days non stop. Otherwise, its a non issue as .mobi is the whole reason why I've taken interest in domaining at all. well, Mobi Cheap, and I agree, I wish they'd get some ads placed everywhere -would help my.mobis.
