A new tool from Microsoft aims to take some of the annoyance--and risk--out of mistyping a URL when browsing Web sites.

The company's Cybersecurity and Systems Management group released a prototype of Strider URL Tracer with Typo-Patrol version last week. The tool is designed to seek out and block mistyped versions of domain names--www.frod.com instead of www.ford.com, for example.

Typo squatters are companies that exploit slips of the fingers by registering for mistyped versions of popular URLs. Some typo domains are parking lots for pay-per-click and syndicated advertising, according to a Microsoft research paper published alongside the tool. The group's researchers found that a mere six services have a presence on between 40 and 70 percent of active typo domains.

In addition to serving up ad links, typo squatters deliver pop-ups and pop-unders, and can redirect surfers to the intended domain. Often, the users are never even aware that they have visited a third-party site. As a result, many legitimate companies have been blamed for pop-ups advertising porn.

On top of this, companies may end up paying out for the advertising that leads customers to sites they were already aware of and trying to reach.

Consumers can be at risk with typo domains. Some are used in phishing scams, which mimic the look and layout of legitimate online businesses in an effort to dupe people out of personal information such as bank passwords.

Others use wrongly typed URLs for popular children's Web sites to lead surfers to porn sites, or to sites looking to exploit children.

The Microsoft research team described common mistakes people make when typing in a URL: missing dots (Newscom), transposition (Nwes.com), suffix replacement (News.net,) character omission (New.com), character insertion (Newws.com) and character replacement (Newz.com).

Strider URL Tracer alerts people when they are redirected to a third-party site, according to a description on Microsoft's research Web site. It can trace pop-up advertising back to the redirecting domains that supplied them. Parents can use it to block domains that may redirect their children to porn. Companies can use it to monitor for trademark infringement or fraud.

The software is free to download from Microsoft's Strider URL Tracer site. Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6 are required for it to work.

The tool works by accessing a bank of information on typo domains from Strider Typo-Patrol, a network of 17 machines run out of Microsoft's Cybersecurity and Systems Management group. The network generates anticipated typos of popular domain names, then scans the Internet for these typo-domains. If they are active, it adds them to the database.

No. . .They cant do this, why do they, its how some people get traffic to their sites.

That's crazy because it gives Micro$oft the power to determine which websites are "legitimate" and which are not. What if I want to go to "Frod.com" but MS$ tells me its not where I want to go? Doesn't seem in keeping with the spirit of the Internet at all. :(

sounds like a misdirect scam approaching ? :|

Microsoft probably did this as part of their anti-phishing project, since domain typos and the like can be capitalized for fraudulent purposes.

This does indeed hurt the typo squatters here, i'm glad i'm not one of them.

As much as I might agree with what Microsoft are trying to do here (protect people, hopefully) it gives them way too much power. What does it mean "block" the websites? It wont let people access them?

What if it's a legitimate site with a weird name? Blook.com...will that no longer be accessible if Microsoft thinks its a typo of Book.com?

Let's hope they think long and hard about how they'll overcome these types of issues...god knows what will happen otherwise. (FireFox on the rise, probably..;))

Why do companies seem to always want to blame the people who take up typo domains for visitors accidentally typing in the typo and then having whatever happens happen? Why isn't it the fault of the people that mistype the domain?

- Stuff like phishing will always be wrong, and those typo owners that take part in that practice and them ALONE should be held accountable for that practice. Them doing the illegal crap they do should not be projected onto the rest of typo owners.

- There is NOTHING wrong with redirecting people to the site they were trying to type-in with an affiliate id or whatever to get payment for it. Why? They pay all other affiliates the same, and they are not the owner of the typo domain nor its traffic, so they should have to pay for its traffic just like with any other affiliate.

- I don't know how adult pop-ups on unrelated sites (a typo of Yahoo for instance) should be dealt with. That could be a case of "oh well". It can obviously be damaging to a site's reputation, but then again the person is responsible for what they type in, so oh well. If that person is going to hold it against Yahoo, then it's that person's own fault and they may lose out on a service that they were enjoying.

It's no different than adult websites and/or phishing or virii-laden sites coming up on searches for non-adult terms on search engines like Google. Should a search engine like Google be abandoned because a bad site can take advantage of the way Google's search operates and SEO its way to the top of searches unrelated to it? Or should the bad be taken with the good like it has been? I personally think the latter, but some may disagree, and naturally it's generally the big companies disagreeing with most of the rest of mankind.

Leave it to Microsoft though to try and make that decision for all of us though. I suppose MS and Verisign should get a room...they'd get along quite well.

Sounds like squatters need to find an additional niche to jump on. If this typo situation wasn't getting out of hand, this wouldn't be happening obviously.

Do you guys even know why it's happening?

Probably will remain for a while, wouldn't worry about this for quite some time, and I'd say they're only looking to please the much larger websites too.

One of the things I like about google is the spell check.

When I fat finger a search term, they usually have a link to the correct search for me. Of importance here is that the search engine doesn't look at my misspelling and go "O.K., here is what you really wanted" and substitute my search. It wouldn't work, because their spell check assumption is not always right.

Hopefully MS take this approach. Flag typos perhaps, but don't redirect. The client should not disregard the DNS entry for a domain. ( unless MS plan on being the domain name server for the whole planet? Yay. I can't wait... )

Maybe for now but I can soon see it becoming part of the windows install or standard update.

Just more big brother.

Myself I balm it more on most people in general won't take self responsibility for their own actions, and are always looking for Government or big business to take care of their problems.
