Michigan shoplifting suspect crushed in trash compactor.

DELTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Michigan authorities say a shoplifting suspect has died after being crushed in a trash compactor where she was hiding.

The Eaton County sheriff's department said two women fled a Lansing-area TJ Maxx discount store after spraying a security guard with mace. A deputy found one of the women behind a nearby trash compactor.

Deputies say the woman wouldn't say where the other woman was hiding.

Shortly afterward, authorities got a call about a woman trapped in the trash compactor. Tyree Monique Tate of Delta Township was pulled from the machine by rescuers and taken to a hospital, where the 26-year-old later died.

The surviving suspect's name hasn't been released.

Now wait a minute. The deputy found one suspect hiding behind a trash compactor and did not search the inside of the trash compactor for the other suspect? Did that deputy sleep through his police training, never watch an episode of Cops, or never play hide and seek in elementary school?

It's unimaginable to me that anyone above the age of two would not have checked the inside of the trash compactor before turning it on. I'd also certainly like to know what "shortly afterward" was in terms of time. The shorter the time frame, the more likely the person who turned it on should have been aware that the hiding suspect had not yet been found. I know I would have inspected the interior of the trash compactor before turning it on. I'd probably have done that anyway just in case an animal were inside foraging for food.

Granted, these two people committed criminal acts, but just think about their families who now have to live with their senseless tragic loss. Hey, I dislike criminals just like the next guy, but she was only 26 years old. How many of you either did something stupid at that age or knew someone who did? Pity.

I have to agree with you.. doesn't make sense the cop didn't check and that the compactor operator didn't look before operating the machine.

No one deserves to go like that.

A horrible way to go. Probably that other woman must had known she was inside the compactor. I can't blame the compactor operator, people don't normally go hide inside trash compactors.

No but you're actually supposed to check for animals, spray cans, glass, etc. before you operate the machinery.

The fitted compactors at my work are turned on before you put rubbish in then they take ages to clear it, if this was the case, It could have been pushed before she got into it. (they're not all loud)
