I see some big sales with .CC's lately. They seem to be picking up.

Is this one of the fastest growing country TLD's out there? I grabbed up large.cc and rep.cc and wonder if they'll have some value in the future. It's tough to tell right now.

Barely. There may have been a few reported sales, but I honestly think that the "CC" cctld is fading out. There is one reason I can attribute this to: Lack of meaning.

The "cc" cctld was acquired by Verisign from the Cocos Islands (Information from CIA World Factbook on Cocos Islands) and was the first cctld to be commercially sold without restrictions, as an alternative to gTLD's like .com, .net, etc.

The fact that it was the first commercial, unrestricted ccTLD (dating back to 1999), it was popular. Since the incarnation of other commercialized ccTLD's like .fm, .am, .tv and .ws, .cc has taken a backseat to those ccTLD's that have a meaning behind them.

But, in saying that, there is still a (smaller) market for these names, because the extension doesn't restrict it to a more refined audience. That is what is making it survive.

Was one of the fastest. Not anymore.

Hopefully they'll be of some value in the future. As of right now, I would imagine that there are many 3 letter .cc domains left out there. I see it as a big speculation that has been going on for six years now. To me, seems like too much of a risk.

Best of luck

Very informative post there stscac. :)

I'm a ".com fetishist" to be honest, i've never seen .cc to hold much value. I guess you may be right in saying the really really really good premium keywords might be worth something in .cc, but most of the time...worth nothing.

I'll play something of a devil's advocate and point out some "strengths" that .cc, especially as compared to many other ccTLD's (Not advocating the overthrow of the .com empire, however ;) ).

1) Managed by Verisign (Yes, THE Verisign) and not some smaller, less experienced companies that would not have the advertising weight behind the extension that it could do (If it so chose).
2) Has had a number of large sales recently (Especially when compared to other ccTLD's) , see http://www.dnjournal.com .
3) Short, memorable, and being used by a handful of county governments for their publicity (Increasing awareness)
4) Recent exponential growth in the development of the websites developed.cc
5) And lastly, there are good names still available. Try to find a great 1 word keyword in .com, .net, .de, .ca, or other and you will be disappointed. .cc you could still get a great keyword combo for SE optimization as well as branding.

In any event, for full disclosure I do have a sizeable position in .cc so I'm not entirely unbiased, but I've all but given up on .name and .in that I also played in :gl:
