It’s hard to let go but I’m getting out of the webmaster business for good. I just graduated college & will be starting my new job on July 17th. They told me I’m not allowed to have a business on the side due to NASD regulations.
This site is one of a kind, with the major value lying in the exclusive ownership of over 1,000+ original videos (930+ are posted already, there are between 1,000 and 1,500 total original video files including videos we haven’t had a chance to edit and some that aren’t as good of quality) & the die-hard, committed community in the forums that supplies the content for free on a daily basis. Every article (175 total) & video you see on MMK is made by a member of our community & in the overwhelming majority of the videos they say, “This is __ from MakeMeKing.com”. The site is most known for “Dare Videos” where anybody can dare us by posting a new dare in the forums. Another member of the site will complete the dare, submit the video, & it’ll get posted if it’s good enough. All content is exclusive to the site, owned 100% by me, & not seen anywhere else online. We have many different types of clips: painful, funny, eating/puking, outrageous, etc. Some examples of our videos:

You can select the date the update will appear including scheduling it to appear in the future. Then you select what content you want in the update (like the videos shown above on how to do it). You select which forum thread you want to promote discussion on and the royal link plugs.

The homepage at the top right has a flash player. The news is what updates this. You can make a news post and then the image will appear in the rotation of news displayed in the flash player automatically.
The amount of work involved is insignificant. The moderators take care of the forum (this is a coveted position to have since each time I accept applications I get over 20). I have someone who works for free editing the videos and updating the site and when I said I had to sell the site he said, “I wouldn't mind to retain my position, but I am for whatever works best for the future of the site” so he is committed to continuing on with that role. The editing is extremely easy because most people who send in videos have it pre-edited in some regard so you could do it yourself or keep the assistant that I’ve used for free.

This site has been a hobby for me while in college and I haven’t really capitalized on it as much as I could have. I have not done anything proactively, which is something I regret. Every single action that has been done was instigated by someone else. I have been approached by: MTV Europe, MTV in the U.S., and The Maury Show for use of my clips in their respective shows. Also, I have signed contracts with a very well known company on the net that distributes some of the clips on cell phones in Europe and also a contract for 28 clips that were going to be shown on NBC’s primetime show “Most Outrageous Moments” (paying $2,250 total per clip with $1,125 of that going to MMK on a possible 28 clips total and the other half going through our partner who got the contract for us) but that show very recently got cancelled before they used the footage. These clips are exclusively owned by me and can be licensed through a variety of sources.
People have been asking for DVDs, T-Shirts, Bumper stickers, etc. and I never had them made because like I said, I really haven’t capitalized on the value of the unique community. T-shirts were eventually ordered when one of the members paid for 50 shirts with her own money and we began selling them (it was basically a donation because she wanted everyone to have T-shirts made). There are a lot of ways someone could come in and capitalize on the site with ads and the exploitation of original media by selling it on cell phones, putting it on TV, making DVDs and selling them, licensing it to other places, etc. There has been an increasing trend of viral videos showing up on TV (Bravo, USA, VH1, etc) and cell phones (like Amp’d Mobile and in Europe) so if someone was proactive then they might be able to get some good deals and since the new owner would own the exclusive rights to the videos they would be able to license them.
We get only 9-10 cents CPM from buds inc which is terrible I know but I just never got around to doing anything else the last several months. We used to use Interclick which paid a lot more but I pulled them to be safe when I heard some bad rumors about them. With as many page views as MMK generates a good monetizing scheme should be profitable especially if you put ads in the forums or had ads showing before videos.
I have no doubt that anyone who knows what they’re doing could monetize the site exponentially more than I have. I don’t contact people or post threads trying to sell ads (I maybe did two times a year ago) and I rarely (less than 10% I’d say) respond to emails inquiring about advertising. I know it’s bad and I should have even went with gorillanation when they were trying to get me to switch advertising agencies but like I said, this was just a hobby and the business side wasn’t really what interested me or provided me with fun on my college hobby. The goal of the site when I was running it was to have a few laughs and make a site that I’d want to go to if I was a visitor, not to make as much money as possible. There’s nothing wrong with trying to make money off of the site but this was a release and a hobby for me, not something I concentrated too much on or took too seriously.
