:$:Ive been in this domain stuff for a bit now and have been unsuccessful with reselling my names. I have made a few dollars from cash parking and lots of my domains have good counts for exact monthly searches. Wondering what the trick is. How do people make a living doing this. Why am i not getting any offers for my domains? Some have been appraised in the thousands but still no offers after being listed for 4 months. Is it best to reg new domain names and try to sell them, or best to buy already reg domain names and resell??

Anyone that tells you there is easy money in domaining is probably trying to sell you something.

It all comes down to understanding what makes a good brand and knowing enough about internet industry segments to judge the likelihood that someone is going to pay $x for it.

The final decision to buy a domain for resale is an intangible process relying on intuition rather than automated tools.

All the good domains are gone. So better to buy already regged domains for resale.

Unless you are very experienced, you are not going to find anything still available in 2013, that is bound to sell for a significant profit.

I hardly register domains any more, when I do it's for development - I'm not expecting that they will ever sell.

The aftermarket is where quality domains are to be found, but you need to understand what to buy, and what NOT to buy.
The domains you bought were pretty bad, but there are millions of other domains on sale, many of which are better (or less bad). On the other hand there are NOT millions of buyers. More than 99% of all domains are worthless, so you'll need to own (acquire) those that somebody would want.

But the vast majority of domainers are domain collectors, and losing money. It's not like you are the exception.

Do you have any idea of how many people actually make a living doing this ? Very very few. The icons of the industry such as Rick S. Or Frank S. are not representative at all.

PS: ignore appraisals, especially automated/paid appraisals.

So this isn't an evening hobby that is guaranteed to generate any revenue in the end. What about new domain names that have a higher global search rating?

The value of reported search figures is marginal. The value of the name in the mind of the buyer is the important part.

If the buyer wants high search figures, you should be selling them a name with high search figures.

For my own name purchases I tend to focus on exact match not global.
