M-4 is a huge generic term in the firearm industry. The term has 45.5 million results in Google. WordTracker reports 20,790 exact searches per month for "m4" and 77,310 searches per month containing "m4". WordTracker also reports 2,310 exact searches per month for "m-4" and 11,460 searches per month containing "m-4". Either way, Google ignores the hyphen.
The United States Marine Corps has ordered its officers (up to the rank of lieutenant colonel) and SNCOs to carry the M4 carbine instead of the M9 handgun.
