Did you know that the total list of domain extensions is 882? 882!

The infographic shared here is a timeline from 1985 to 2016, which lists the birth year of every domain extension since .com in 1985.

Growth facts:
  • 300M domain names were reached in Q4 2015 according to DomainWire Global TLD Report.
  • Over the last two years the number of domain extensions has increased from 273 top level domains to 882 including the ones launching this year.
  • A newly released scientific paper in The Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics concluded that the lack of domain extensions had stifled demand by 25% – or 75M domain names.

What a stupid idea to have so many (882 TLDs). Too many TLDs will make the domain world unattractive. There will not be much registration on new TLDs and less registration means high subscription rates. These developments only lead .Com to become more popular and will always be in demand. I hope better sense will prevail and stop introducing further TLDs.

google has .soy! What a waste of money.
.lol has me lol too.

out of the nearly 900, there are only a couple that could be useful and truly generic enough to have more than a couple keywords that work with the extension. There are way more bad ones than good ones.

It's almost like when everyone first gets started in domaining. They register a bunch of junk, then realize that no one will buy the junk domains. The new registries are started by domainers who somehow forgot the mistakes they made when they first started in the business. Now they start junk extensions hoping someone will buy into them.

I do own some gtlds but only in a couple extensions.
Do they seriously think that there is a market to support all of that stuff? I think it's one of those things like throw it against the wall and see if it sticks.

Weird math...
145MM/300MM = 48.3% not 45%
124MM/300MM = 41.3% not 40%.

145+124+ 35+ 12 = 316MM, but Q4 2015 number was actually 299MM.

Is there a website that shows how many of each of the new extensions have been regged? .ME just turned 1million.
HAROON, I agree. .com will always have a buyer but few of us can play in that league. The industry will become the 'have and have nots'. You will have to be invited to join certain marketplaces...they don't want the rif/raf.
