Lifetime domain promotions?

Hi,

I have seen a few hosting providers that offer promotion that includes life time domain registration for their customers. Do you consider that as appropriate? I'm asking this question because a contract does not mean lifetime. "As long as someone is a customer" is not lifetime, isn't it?

Maybe it is convinient for domain owners and saves some money but I'm curious if you think this marketing method is correct or not?

Best Regards
D.

you are correct, as long as you remain paying the hosts so they fatten their pocker with your money :)

Once i called 1and1 and waited over thep hone for 30 mins, after i asked why don't you hire more damn staff, you earn so much. He replies i am not in charge of that, also i don't think we require more staff. I was going to shout why don't you just come out and say "we don't want to spend any more money than the minimum we have to"

I must make a comment on your website fcolor, Its fantastic design and looks Very professional.

:) Thank you for the kind words. Well to be honest I'm also curious why the huge corporations try to squeeze every cent from a customer but at the same time are very reluctant to hire more staff. All of us spent at least 10 to 15 minuteswaiting for a customer support operator while calling their wireless provider, bank, local authorities and etc.

About domain names... I strongly believe that everione that consider their domain name as important must keep it under their own account. It is not about that a host will cheat. It is about the ownership. I have seent too many hosting companies that register domain names with their own contacts instead of put cusomer's ones... and this is not good policy at all.

Cheers

If you think about it a little bit more, who wants to take those customer calls
and end up earning their ire, especially those who are just plain ignorant and
naive about these things?

From what I also gather, employee turnover for registrar customer support is
quite high as well. But that's just what I gather, and I don't have any proof to
back it up for now.

Well, not too many people know the difference between a domain name and a
website. When a small business owner who's starting out on the net seeks a
website professional, more often than not they'll say "I want a website".

Indeed, this is a "dirty little secret" not too many people are aware of. But I
can speculate one reason why many hosting companies adopt this practice.

Especially for those who offer domain registrations either for discounted prices
or even "lifetime", they're taking losses, and hoping the customer will stay
with them long enough for them to profit from their patronage. But people are
very fickle minded, especially the newbies.

And if they aren't getting what they want, more often than not, they'll want
to cancel their hosting after less than a month or so. So hosting companies
tend to "hold the domain hostage" to compensate for the financial loss they
take from their customers' change of mind.

True, it's not good policy at all. I'm just stating what I think, but it's not at all
surprising since I too see this happen a lot.

to be honest. i have a few domains which are owned by my customers but the ownship details are in the companies name. they are free to transfer the domain to there own accounts any time they feel like it (we dont offer those lifetime deals, you pay etc and we set it all up)

we do this because our clients are the kind of people that are not to clued up on the internet and how it works. all they want is a working website thats up alot.

so we do this so if anyone has any queries they can contact us. if its a problem with our services or the domain we can fix it (since it is under our account and we can know about it) if its for the client and they need to know we can contact them and explain to them so they understand whats going on.

There are good and bad reasons for it but i belive that if we can control it for our clients and manage there domain then we can help make there lives a bit easier and can help improve the relationship between us and the client.

if a client came to me and said id like to transfer my name to such and such, id say sure. it will take so long to do. can you give me this this and this. after all theyve paid us for the registration fees. its just if they transfer it. its up to them to support and manage apart from getting help with nameservers.
