Since then other opportunities have come and gone. But often we haven’t seen or responded to them in real time.

Great info I'll share one of my mine that I grabbed the first day it was mentioned nanowarming.com- essentially it is a process that allows organs to be frozen and thawed without damaging them. It will make organ waiting lists a thing of the past.

We just had a outbreak of zombie raccoons here in New York, its been all over the news.

So for laughs I punched it up in godaddy domain appraisals and wouldnt you know it, both "zombieraccoons.com" and "zombieraccoon.com" have been registered.

I guess I missed out on the next big thing.

In order to cash in perfectly on the next Big Thing there are seven steps to success:

1) Identify the new trend long before it has any significance

2) Recognize it as something that is going to be really big in the future (Technology Trigger)

3) Invest in it when everyone is else saying “you’re nuts”

4) Avoid the temptation to sell during the first wave of media attention (Peak of Inflated Expectations)

5) Keep the faith through implementation failures and public rejection (Trough of Disappointment)

6) Decline lucrative offers during the first wave of public acceptance (Slope of Enlightenment)

7) Sell for top dollar when the next Big Thing becomes an “overnight success” and is part of everyday life (Plateau of Productivity)

There are two good times to invest in emerging technologies or markets. The first is obviously at inception. The second (and the safest IMO) is in the start of the Trough of Disillusionment after the initial burst of hopeful media hype and widespread attention has faded. What I called in a prior DN Geek blog, the Second Wave.

These are outstanding tips
One of the main problems with 99% of all domainers is they have little to no patience.
I have bought great names from domainers for little money because they cant wait it out.
5 to 10 years is what it takes for "New trends" to really kick in. I have been sitting on a particular bunch of tech names for 6yrs now with about $70k in sales so far and I haven't even scratched the surface yet.

Patience and lots of it is one of the main ingredients you need in this business.

I read some articles last week about security robots and airport service robots wich are currently being tested (Not quite nanobots but still)

I've long used sources like the Gartner Hype Cycle for emerging-tech domain inspiration/ideas (In fact, I still own some categories right off of the chart you provided, like NeuromorphicHardware / com, etc.) Bottom line, research is key in getting ahead of the pack when it comes to the "next big thing." Also, IMHO, your point about investing for the long term - 10/15/20 years out - is key... (This is, after all, the difference between domain "investing" and domain "flipping" - Also, the difference between selling for $$$ or selling for $$$$$$! )
