Let’s Get Rich – Investing in the Next Big Thing
July 23, 2018 by Keith deBoer

Ninety nine percent of finding the next big thing is discounting all the noise of those that want to convince you that what they have is the next big thing.
    — Rick Swartz, The Domain King®

We all wish we could have registered the 1997 gems that are selling now for 6 or 7 figures. So why didn’t we? The reality is that most us were online in 1997. I know I was. And yet we didn’t buy. Since then other opportunities have come and gone. But often we haven’t seen or responded to them in real time.

Don’t believe me? Take a look at these 2018 sales.

Opportunities are around everywhere all it takes is for you to recognize and act.
    Thanks for the eye-opener.
I will do justice to those topics and see what will come out of them.

Great info I'll share one of my mine that I grabbed the first day it was mentioned nanowarming.com- essentially it is a process that allows organs to be frozen and thawed without damaging them. It will make organ waiting lists a thing of the past.

We just had a outbreak of zombie raccoons here in New York, its been all over the news.

So for laughs I punched it up in godaddy domain appraisals and wouldnt you know it, both "zombieraccoons.com" and "zombieraccoon.com" have been registered.

I guess I missed out on the next big thing.

    These are outstanding tips (y)
One of the main problems with 99% of all domainers is they have little to no patience.
I have bought great names from domainers for little money because they cant wait it out.
5 to 10 years is what it takes for "New trends" to really kick in. I have been sitting on a particular bunch of tech names for 6yrs now with about $70k in sales so far and I haven't even scratched the surface yet.

Patience and lots of it is one of the main ingredients you need in this business.

Great stuff. The difficult thing, I think, is to practice it in reality...

If it feels good, it is a good decision ;). If it's the next big thing?! Time will tell.. You'll have to wait it out..(Wisdom from article above)
I read some articles last week about security robots and airport service robots wich are currently being tested (Not quite nanobots but still)

Nice insights in your article, @Keith DeBoer!

I've long used sources like the Gartner Hype Cycle for emerging-tech domain inspiration/ideas (In fact, I still own some categories right off of the chart you provided, like NeuromorphicHardware / com, etc.) Bottom line, research is key in getting ahead of the pack when it comes to the "next big thing." Also, IMHO, your point about investing for the long term - 10/15/20 years out - is key... (This is, after all, the difference between domain "investing" and domain "flipping" - Also, the difference between selling for $$$ or selling for $$$$$$! :xf.wink:)

In 1997 I was 10 years old. I wouldn't be introduced to the internet until approximately 5 years after that.

I was aware of bitcoins at an early age. I was a freelance writer and I got paid with bitcoins but I never even thought it would have gotten this big. I was aware of 3D printing too. I thought it was going to be something but drones started taking over.

Something that I notice more and more is that you don't have to have very deep knowledge before it becomes obvious how little many people who claim to know a lot actually know.

For myself, I see it as a bad move to buy domains in a field that I know little about. The most glaring example is the number of marijuana domains that no one in the industry has ever or will ever speak, but get bought up and hyped like they are golden.

Basically, unless you really understand the industry, youd do just as well buying lottery tickets.
