Probably.

Usually, some news stories on a topic create some initial excitement and then things slowly die down. The term "inks" was slowly trending down, and then TV LINKS materialized and looked what happened:

LINKS

But then TV Links was closed down and you see how it affected searches. So, any story comes and goes. I think domain names may see a resurgence if there is a big story, or may just continue to trend down - like everything else, it too has its 15 minutes of fame. But, this doesn't mean the market vanishes. Just the excitement may cool down a bit.

Maybe (almost certainly) the searches about domains (with the main search engines) are decreasing, but that doesn't mean that domains are less important for an (online) business. Since I know the main forums about domaining I don't search anymore for "domains" at the main search engines. And the average user just type in your domain (when they know your site):

1: down the address bar
2: completely in the search engine

.

No worry, good names keep their value :imho:

I would expect the market to have taken a dip along with the US RE markets.... the 'hobby' domainers have had their purse strings tied recently... it's going to be an interesting year or two now; UK house prices are under pressure, foods going up significantly, oils not likely to dip much below $80 in future - especially if the $ weakens further, in fact it won't just be domaining that takes a hit... it'll be pretty much everything except drugs & alcohol as is usual in every recession.

Hold tight!

Since there is more globalization, we should surely have more attention for the global market (I live in Europe), but I don't foresee a recession here in Europe (I hope so, the markets follow eachother very quickly), and since I'm more focused on the european continent ..
I don't know what I'm must to expect.

Don't forget sex!

Anyway, I agree, a global recession hits everything. During the 2000 - 2002 period, domain values were hit pretty hard, as interest in creating new websites waned. Then it came back. Some down times, some up times.

Forget about that stuff about globalization neutralizing down turns. The U.S. is the stomach for the world, and when it stops eating, the rest of the world feels it. The U.S. consumer and corporate world is way over its head in debt, is no longer capable of paying off its debt (corporate defaults are on the way), and everyone around the world is going to feel it. Ditto for the U.K. My guess is that everyone will flock to gold. The Feds have every intention of flooding the world with dollars.

Everyone will feel it, and we will all have to tighten our belts.

some excellent points here,

the reason for my google trends query was that
aaron wall in his seobook post (i can't seem to find which one)
talked about investing in markets that grow as opposed to ones that shrink
and used the google trends example

here is the query with seo
http://www.google.com/trends?q=domain+name,+domains,+seo

now i know that this trends tool should be used with grain of salt, especially not as a Market predictor, was just surprised about the downward trend for "domains"

another interesting one is

.com vs .net vs .org vs .mobi
http://www.google.com/trends?q=.com,+.net,+.org,+.mobi&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0

Hi,

It is like every other market. Once the fad fades, then it is more difficult to make money. You have to be selective, know what you are doing, and work at it.

In a faddish market, anyone can make money. Look at what happened with housing. The problems wtih fads, is that you never know when it is going to crash.

Many online booksellers went out of business after the initial shakeout. The better ones, like Amazon, keep making money.

what does this mean if anything?
the demand for domain names slowing down ?

:hi:

That chart is about search trends not domain registrations.

There's much of the world still yet to go online.

There's IDN.

New people are being born everyday...all over the world.

New companies are being formed every day...all over the world.

"does this mean... the demand for domain names slowing down ?

No!

hi Rich can you explain what a fadish market is?
Do you mean it is like the Money Market, where money has no intrinsic value but Only because people believe in it. ?
