Legendary DN #1: X.com
- Registered in 1993.
- Current Owner: PayPal Inc.
- Currently: Inactive
You probably know 1 character .net and .org have been registered on December 1, 1993 by the IANA. One year before, Jon Postel from the same organisation registered all the remaining 1 Character .com domains.
Why?
Jon Postel and the IANA didn’t want one company or one guy to have the full control on 1 letter or 1 number online… All these domains are now inactive and unavailable to anyone. If you check the Whois infos it will say : « Reserved - IANA ».
Well, almost all, because 6 single-letter .com/.net/.org were registered before the IANA’s initiative, here they are:
That’s it, only 3 1-character .com domains are not « reserved » making them « Legends of the DN History » and probably the coolest domains to own. You probably have in mind the Z.com sale from Nissan to GMO Internet last December for 6,8 Millions USD. Z.com is now developed whereas Q.com belongs to CenturyLink and forwards to a Login page.
X.com belongs to PayPal Inc. It’s the only non-reserved L.com completely unused. It was previously used as a redirection to EbayInc.com and then to PayPal/X.commerce page. For some reason, PayPal doesn't care about it anymore or why not, keeping it for a future project, who knows?
To my mind, X.com is the coolest DN ever, X can mean anything, everywhere. If well auctioned, I’m sure it would beat sex.com and its 14 Millions sale. What do you think?
Do you think PayPal should develop and promote X.com?
In 2005, ICAAN thought of auctioning the 23 remaining 1-character .com DN, it finally never happen.
Would you like all the L.com and N.com to be for sale on the market? If yes, what would be the average sale price and value to you?
What would be the best 1-character .com domain… X.com? 1.com? 8.com?
Right now, only the L.org or N.org can be developed thanks to the 94project.org program who allows foundations and non-profit organisations to use this kind of domains.
For example, 7.org is the foundation of the former football (soccer) player David Beckham.
Other « Legendary DN » stories are coming soon, PM me if you think about a domain that can be considered as a true legend of the DN history
