Is it permissble to design a software yourself to catch a domain as it expires, then resell it for profit.

Is there any laws or terms and conditions which prevent this from happening?

I don't see how it should be illegal in general. It depends on what the software does though. If you (ab)use a registrar for making queries and do so without permission they might object to it. In many cases their terms and conditions don' allow it.

You can't catch it as it expires, you have to wait for it to drop. Chances are that the registrar will keep it if its any good.

Im not familiar with these terms like registrar. As far as I know whoever catches a domain first gets to keep it. However services such as dropcatch.com or snapnames.com have very powerful systems. Its difficult to compete with them and they auction their caught domains in public auctions.

What does the registrar do with them?
Can you tell me of different registars?

    Sorry for being a noob

it's not difficult to compete against services, it's impossible. You are wasting your time trying to do so.

You can dropcatch low competition names that don't get backordered with a service.

registrars are simply the companies that sell the domains: Godaddy, Name.com etc. If you want to register a domain you need their registration system. If you want to dropcatch you need their systems too.

Nothing is absolute mate. There are many dropcatch services which outbids the others. May be OP will be the creator of a much advanced service which will outbid all others, who knows?

As far as legality is concerned, nobody would be doing it if it wasn't. It's all fine and well : )

I regularly do so with my own software. Only works for domains that other big dropcatchers are not after. It's easier and faster than trying to manually hand reg a dropping domain.

Namesilo has an API specifically for the sole purpose of dropcatching domains, which is only available during the "drop" time of day. You can use other registrars' api as well.

There is a limit on how many requests can be made simultaneously. Usually there is a 10 minute ban from the API if you go over the limit. It's different for each registrar, though.

For instance, dynadot does not limit you to how many requests per second, but you cannot send another request before the previous request has been processed.

Do note, that to register names via API, you must already have enough credit on your registrar account to cover the cost of registration ..

Not true, you can register drop catch names through your registrar, though you are limited to their resources.
