Alright, this is another rant from me.

I've had this problem lately with people who like to post prices for auctions and not state any kind of reserve. I just found out this happened to me yet again. I'm tired of legitimately bidding on something to be told my bid isn't enough a day or more later. At least state there is a reserve on the auction or something to let people know that you're not taking this price. Otherwise don't list an auction for a price you won't take. It's wasting everyone's time and it's particularly annoying to say the least.

In some instances I would have gone higher for the item(s) but because of this misleading practice I make it a point not to do business with these people.

Anyone else have these troubles? I'm sorely tempted to leave negative feedback.

i dont know about domains, but in general personally never ever deal on ebay with items where is written RESERVE NOT MEET. It is waste of time.

Leave negative feedback. I've had to do it before. The funny thing is when you do leave negative feedback, they try to retaliate and leave you negative feedback. It's an easy fix though, if the auction was here, and someone left you false/retaliatory negative feedback you can post in the admin section at the bottom and they will remove the feedback for you. I try to work things out before posting negative feedback, but some people are so hard to work with you are left with no choice.

on ebay, the seller has to set the reserve, so that if the buyer reaches the set reserve than the seller is obliged to proceed with the sale. If an impossible reserve is set, then ebay forbids after sales offers by the seller or the buyer. I think the original poster of this thread is complaining about sellers in NP auctions who have no obligation to reveal a reserve and can move it about after the auction has commenced.

Are you talking about NP or EBay either way wrong forum.

Well common sense dictates I wouldn't be talking about eBay guys putting aside that I didn't even state eBay anywhere in my post. There, you must set a reserve and you are informed of when your bid doesn't make it. I'm reffering to specifically forum auctions (not just NP) where the user posts a start price and doesn't post any kind of reserve. Then when you contact them after a days time or more you get a response back saying "oh that's not enough." I consider this outright misleading in conducting auctions and I just thought I'd see if this is something I'm coming across or what and I'd like to get it off my chest.

Are you talking about NP or EBay either way wrong forum.

I'm not specifically addressing either and it's definitely not the wrong forum. It's clearly not solely about NP or a specific scam. It's about people who don't know how to properly conduct domain auctions.

A seller must sell an item like that. Generally people who sold over 50 items (you can check that by feedback) are professional enough to handle something like that.

Yes it is my pet peeve about auctions as well.
But at least I don't have that problem with eBay in Australia.
eBay Australia doesn't allow Reserve pricing for that very reason .
here on NamePros
I get really annoyed were someone says starting bid $1
and either Says reserve is $50 or Worse doesn't state that there is a Reserve.
If any one wants a Minimum Amount start Sale at that.
It helps both sides of the sales
Buyers don't get annoyed by thinking their bid is Acceptable
Sellers if they don't get any bid's know that their Min. Price is too high.

I hate when people extend auctions at the last second!

Well I don't even mind having a reserve as long as it's stated that one exists. It just bothers me when a price is listed but no details. As you said it's very frustrating to have a bid that they won't accept. I'll let this thread die but please keep this thread in mind next time you post an auction and don't post a reserve.

Well I don't want it to die yet. If you have a reserve, always post it even if your auction doesn't start at your reserve. I've overpaid for some things due to no reserve being posted and I know I overpaid because auctions started at 1/100 of what I paid only because I didn't want to lose.

I don't even partake in auctions that are set up as, what I like to call, bait!

It is my firm belief that people use these tactics, not to sell their item, rather to "test the waters" for that item.

They start by creating a half baked thread, not stating any clear terms, so that they can change it to suit their personal needs.

Acceptable Forum Auction techniques

Happy bidding to all ;)

Yes, I do find this rather annoying. If you are auctioning off a domain that you want to sell at $100, then don't start off bidding at $1, only to say reserve not met, when you never mentioned a reserve in the original post.

Every auction in a forum should start off having to declare RESERVE or NO RESERVE. But everywhere is goofy, I bid On SEDO and that is not an auction. Person says name for sale $500 right, I offer $500 he does not accept SEDO tells me we cannot make him.

Recently on other board I had a similar experience, where the seller didn't mention that there is BIN on the post and we continued bidding, then suddenly he told that domain has been sold at BIN. Damn frustrating, should have told in the initial post that there is a BIN.

The worst, is when they don't mention the end date :D

The nonexistant end date comes up at all times. I've had people waits weeks, I'd forget I bidded on the name then be approached several weeks later asking for payment. I've made sure that I always ask about end dates now and mark them.

In this case I bid the minimum bid on the site. The user had a BIN posted along with the minimum bid. I PM'ed him back out of curiousity and the least he'd take is $25 less than the BIN although bidding starts a significant amount below this (several hundred).

I've participated on some auctions on the for sale board here and bid on an Iem and the buyer kept telling me I was getting out bid on another sales board, but would not disclose where the other sales board was I was so Poed I wanted to rip throuh the computer and strangle this guy ( IT sounded like a scam). I posted on the sales board that this was unfair, than I was warned by NamePros staff I couldn't even post that. Love Namepros, but WTF?
