.LA is really Laos, .VC is a Caribbean island. So we are not dealing with much local demand for these names. .LA is presented as the domain for Los Angeles, but Affilias, who runs it, has done nothing that I am aware of to connect it with the city or to promote it in any way, other than taking people's money. VC is promoted as "Venture Capital" or "Very Cool", neither is sticking very well.
So what we have is two of a number of small country extensions that do not get much attention. The $35/year price is cheaper than most. The Los Angeles "meaning" is one of the strongest of the group, after .TV, so if you have a name that would relate to LA then that might work. There are better keywords available in .VC, because it lacks a good meaning, so the two factors probably even out. There are a number of two letter domains available in both extensions, last time that I checked.
These are long-term moves, they are very difficult to sell at this time. There simply is very little interest. Perhaps the best names are sleeping giants that will awake as the other extensions become saturated, perhaps not. Anyone who puts money into this kind of name should get the very best possible keywords or 2 letter names, and be prepared to hold for (guess) five years of renewal fees. And put most of your money elsewhere, in less risky investments.
I have several two letter .LA's. I truly do not know if they are one of my best moves, or one of my worst.
