The first few weeks.

I've noticed that when starting a new web site the search engines don't seem to know what to do with you.

I've seen this happen to a few different web sites of mine.

Example: GreatWebSite.com is my site, Brand New to the Web.

Day3: for keyword "Great Web Site" Google rank=n/a, Yahoo=1
Day4: same keyword, Google rank=1, Yahoo=1
Day5: same keyword, Google rank=n/a, Yahoo=1
Day6: same keyword, Google rank=35, Yahoo=15
Day7: same keyword, Google rank=n/a, Yahoo=1
Day8: same keyword, Google rank=1, Yahoo=n/a

What is up with this? Does it eventually level out or will do they keep bouncing around?

It will get settled. Recently some update was made and many people got good positions while many lost their top positions in the index.

That's probably google dance. Its hard to understand the logic behind it. It will be settled when time passes.

I think it has settled a bit. I'm now in a good position for all my keywords in Google and Yahoo. But what about MSN.. The've only spidered my site 10 time and they don't have me indexed. Where as Google spidered my site 250+ times already. And the Intomi Slup bot has hit me over 150 times..

Hello friend,

Please try and make huge number of backlinks. The bots will hit your site more often and your position will improve.

Also submit a sitemap to google webmaster account.

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure new sites do get an artificial boost in the SERPs. This fits my observations, and makes sense as a way of breaking a vicious circle that threatens to make the SERPs go stale: you need exposure to get backlinks, but you need backlinks to get exposure.
