I have had a lot of discussion recently with other domainers about the best way to keep track of your domains. I even wrote a blog entry about it in February: http://www.leadrefs.com/blog/?p=193

I was curious how you guys do it or what do you think is the best way?

This can be a hassle and your blog post is good but if your lazy (like I sometimes get) then it goes right back to not beign kept up and losing track.

I really should do some sort of spread sheet and get my ass in gear!

Spreadsheet, sorted by exp. date. Currently I have on that spreadsheet:

domain
where at (where it's regisgered)
exp. date
extension
category
exact global match
what other extensions are registered in that name
reg date
traffic
info to help sales column

If you have Godaddy you can easily keep track of everything.

They offer a spreed sheet of all of your domains and you can pick and choose what factors you want to keep track of.
Domain name, Nameservers, Whois, Creation date, Forwarding, Whois View count, ect, ect, ect.

I strongly suggest that everyone should download their spreed sheet at least once a week just in case their are any discrepancies.

Its pretty awesome.

Do you do creation date or how much you paid for it?

How often do you update the expiration date?
Does it become a hassle?

So you have all your domains at GD?
What would you do if you didn't?

I keep track of my domains using www.domainpunch.com. It's about $120 from memory, but for me it's been worth its weight in gold. It's the third app I load on my computer after my browser and email client. It's running 24/7. It's very powerful, imho. Before that I used a spreadsheet, like most people.

"Do you do creation date or how much you paid for it?"

That's my reg date, should be creation date aka born on date. How much I paid for it, right now is in my - info to help sales column

"How often do you update the expiration date?
Does it become a hassle?"

Not a hassle at all. If I sell or let it expire, just delete the line. I do have a separate spreadsheet for Domains I've Sold and Past Domains (ones I let expire)

I update the expiration date when I renew. Takes literally a second. Just change 2012 to 2013.

Here is a typical line:

seomakeover.com godaddy/sedo/afternic 6/21/2013 .com brandable $xxx offer at xxx

No I dont have them all there, I have several other registers like everyone else but I just import the other domains info to the spreed sheet that GD creates for me.

GD does most of the work for me.

Interesting.
What would you if you had thousands of domains and had to update their expiration dates?

Let's say 3,650 domains, you would renew on average 10 a day or even hundreds of thousands. In that one column, I change 2012 to 2013 and highlight and paste 10 or whatever down. Again, takes a second. It's nothing.

And then when you have new regs you just add in all the data right?

Yep, doesn't take long at all. Added a few today, maybe 2 minutes.

I get the feeling you are leading to something :]
Are you now offering a service to keep track of domains?

90% of my domains are at Godaddy. Can you tell us where to find this option? I like to play with it AND I take it it can be printed out?

Maybe down the road or something.
But no plans right now.
We have had a ton of people ask us questions though about it and it has really picked up recently for some reason so was curious.

My Account > Launch > Domain Manager > Tools > Exportable List > Add New Export >

Then Click > All Domains > Next
Then Select what factors you want.
Click > Next
Select > CSV
Select > No Compression
Then > Name your file

And then wait a minute and then click Refresh for it to appear.
Then click Download or Open in Excel.

Also to add, after downloading you will need to spreed out the columns.

Thats it :)

I use an old domain sales site script, all my domains are in the database and after I renew a domain I hit update and the new dates/registrar get updated. I renew handfuls every 2 weeks so database constantly gets updated and downloaded for backup.

I use Domain Punch Professional v2.

It's well worth the money. I wish I'd known about it a long time ago, could have saved myself many hours of mucking about with spreadsheets.
