Question is - are PBS likely to pursue this issue?

Not half as likely as a private corporation would be...

TM Issues? I think not, this is a 3 letter acronym and can mean almost anything!

The .com version isn't even owned by the company as well as several other extensions.

Develop to maybe a game site? Or what do you suggest I do with the name?

Obviously you will have to go as far away from PBS as possible with your site. It might be best to brand it something - Peanut Butter Sandwich :P - something unrelated.

The question is why go for this name if you have to steer clear of TM issues.........Someone suggested Peanut Butter Sandwhich.......but he has a point - you are in hot water before you have had a chance to even think about what you will do with the name......Yes it is an acronym, but what does that acronym stand for??? Short of the obvious...

Is there anything so fantastic about 26 OVT with name & ext??

There are alot of very good two &three LLL out there that are screaming out to be regged......without any T-M issues at all.......HOY.TV was a great reg.......keep going along those lines Premium and you will enjoy the rewards down the line....

Good luck

I think that you would need to develop an unrelated niche on that site, rather quickly, just to ensure your intentions are spelled out. It's just me, I am sure, but I really do not like ticking off wealthy people or corporations.

Millers has a point, there are still quite a few excellent .tv domains just laying about waiting to be picked up. Kinda unfortunate that I am sidelined during the last half of this year, no money seems to be the story of my life right now.

Millers - You say the domain stands for the obvious, what is the obvious? I also own TNQ.com, now this domain is the abbreviation of MANY different companies and they all were probably established before the domain was registered. Does that mean they have the right to my domain? NO, please understand that 3 letters can mean almost anything and therefore I shouldn't have much trouble with this name.

I do understand where you are all coming from though, and I greatly appreciate all of your advice.

Perhaps I will register more generic .tv's soon, my particular interest right now is traffic!

If PBS wanted it, they would have got it by now.

There are a LOT of PBS TM's it's true, but especially with the .tv you are playing with fire...especially this particular mark:

http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=v5sb1i.6.30

Word Mark PBS

...;CABLE TELEVISION BROADCASTING; CABLE TELEVISION TRANSMISSION SERVICES; AUDIO AND VIDEO BROADCASTING AND TRANSMISSION VIA THE INTERNET;...

Owner (REGISTRANT) PUBLIC BROADCASTING SERVICE CORPORATION

If they want it, they can take it. You never know though...I'm sure they are 10 years behind on the technology scene.

I like playing with fire :xf.love: .. And your right, PBS would of took the .tv if they really wanted it. And if anything were to happen, I would happily hand them the domain.. its as simple as that!

I'm more interested in what you guys think I should do with the domain?

How can one say for sure that they would have taken it already if they wanted? Many companies have zero clue about domains especially non .com's.

that may apply to many companies, i hardly think that it applies to a media giant though. i'm sure they know their way around the domains..
In any way, if this domain gets used in any way TV related, even though the extension begs for it, i am certain that PBS would knock on your door,.....with a sledgehammer.

I am not quite sure what to make out the acronym,...
professional bowling stars?
professional boxing stars?
public broadcasting service...<< sledgehammer! ;)
perform better sex?
pro board surfing?
many things come to mind, it mainly depends where you see the niche for this DN.

ok, enough the stupidity. my way of going about it would be to start some sort of forum on it that relates to anything but TV, then approach PBS and see if they are interested. you never know, maybe you get lucky!

what the heck does PBS stand for?
Because I sure don't know!
Not all of us are American :)

ukguy > stands for "Public Broadcasting Service" - a huge tv/entertainment group that puts out a ton of shows - i believe its a basic cable channel and includes a lot of childrens shows, but also runs a lot of specials

needless to say, its very popular in the U.S.!

and in regards to the trademark, I agree that it can stand for anything, but if you notice in another post that someone just began here on NP, you can look at the outcome and clearly see that PBS would certainly be able to take it in a hearbeat.

I'm not saying that you all are wrong, but a creative mind does not remove oneself from the reality that well over 80% of the US would disagree (Yes, note I said US. If you want to debate whether any country's IP interest should trump another's, that's a larger discussion for another day.).

I can be just as silly with "CBS" ( Call Brian Stark .tv ; Can't Be Stupid.tv ; Can't Beat Steve .tv and so on and so forth.) and try to pretend like I have some legitimate interest in it, but that won't give me carte blanch to do, well, anything!

I wish you the best, but I still wonder how many times our industry will still strive to protect those who stick their necks out like this... My opinion: let the prudent survive.
