I was under the impression that 5.8 is a pretty strong earthquake, D-: that's if it's in the Richter scale. If it was little then the 5.8 must be in the Mercalli scale.

Yup I live in Los Angeles about 35 minutes northeast of Chino Hills. I am currently at college typing. Was kinda of odd cause I was walking and didnt feel it. But as I was passing a 3 story building and heard chairs being moved. But I knew there was no class was being held in there due to the summer session schedule. But less than 30 seconds later saw many classes leaving the building and sitting in the middle of the park area of the school. It was crazy all the buildings were evacuated. But no structural damage so we were cleared to go back in.

The only thing many of the students, staff and administrators were trying to use their cell phones. And none of us could call out or txt. And we all had different cell phone services.

I am getting some reports from friends whose families are in Las Vegas who said they felt the quake

Yes it is, but not necesarily. It depends on the plates and which direction they are moving and how clost to the surface the earthquake is and where the epicenter is. So there are a lot of factors to make a 5.8 to make some real damage to structures and life other than some shaken emotions.

Glad it wasn't worse. The biggest one we've had here is 4.5, but I was on a school bus and didn't feel it. I didn't believe it when they said there had been an earthquake.

Just heard about it in the news here. They say that in fact it was a 5.4 in the Richter scale, which is still quite strong.

It is but like I said it depends. I have been in stroger quakes with less affect than the one we just had. It again really depends on how the plates are moving UP and Down or side to side or both. I have been in like 6.5 and really wasnt as strong. And like I said when I was walking as well as others at the school, we didnt know the earthquake happened. So like I said it all depends.

I experienced my first earthquake a few months ago, the one in southern Illinois not far from St. Louis. Here in Louisville people were rattled out of bed at 5:30 AM. I thought it was a low flying jet and went back to sleep. It registered 5.2 and later around noon there was a second 4.8.

Before the real thing I had only experienced the simulator at Tech Museum in San Jose and it knocked me off my feet.

Your'e right. I remember in 1977-78 when I was in LA, I had just got into my car and it started shaking as if it was being blown by a sudden strong gush of wind and yet the trees in front of me were NOT moving. Suddenly everyone started running out of their homes. It was a quake that measured only 4.3.

Yeah I just got done talking with my friend living in LA and he said they evacuated, scary stuff. Atleast it wasn't like the one in 1994 that took down part of the interstate.

It appears that buildings in downtown LA shook and swayed for a few seconds. That must be pretty scary for anyone way up in the top floors of a scyscraper.

I do believe that one in '94 that took down the interstate, wasn't that one in San Francisco and the double freeway sandwiched and collapsed?

I didnt feel it in Northern Cal

1989 was the Loma Prieta earthquake. It was the World Series Quake. I sure felt that one. Thats the San Fran one

1994 Was the Northridge Earthquake.

Us Californinia remember these quakes well

Earthquakes are awesome if nobody gets hurt. 5.8 isn't too bad; it's enough to rattle you but if you were driving on the freeway you probably wouldn't even feel it.

that 5.8 you got there is strong enough here, we only have like 2 or 3 intensities.
glad that you're having fun

The state I live in has a minor fault line that causes occasional tremors every decade or so. I couldn't imagine what it must be like constantly having this happen.
