WASHINGTON—The U.S. Senate voted Wednesday to give final approval to legislation creating a payroll-tax credit for employers who hire unemployed Americans, in what Democrats said would be the first of several election-year job-creation bills.
The vote on the $17.5 billion bill was 68-29, with 11 Republicans joining the Democratic majority to support the measure. The legislation now goes to the White House for President Barack Obama's signature.

U.S. Senate has approved an additional $149 billion jobs bill that extends both unemployment benefits and tax breaks for businesses, to be passed back to the House. The measure offers up some $26 billion in tax breaks for businesses and individuals, including extending through 2010 a variety of popular tax breaks that expired at the end of 2009.
There's a separate $15 billion jobs bill about to be passed by the House and Senate.
