Is there a "hack" for anti-wireless?

I bought a USB wifi quite a while back and it refused to work. Then someone told me that my building doesn't allow wireless net access, and that's why I wasn't able to set it up from my side.

I honestly don't know how these things work.

Is it something that must be enabled by my service provider or is there a hack for this? I'm not a cruel person, I swear. I pay quite a bit for ADSL every month, and I should have the rights to do what I want with my connection. :loveyou:

Well, first you need a wireless router - preferable one with a good range - do you have one?

well I dont think so that there is a hack for it

I don't have a wireless router, I have a USB wifi thingy that someone told me would work as a router if I connect it to my PC (with its broadband connection). I'm now guessing that's not enough? :(

You'll need a wireless router - what you have will probably be a wireless dongle, it's basically a USB wireless card.

Actually, you don't NEED a router. The USB dongle SHOULD theoretically be enough.
True, but it's just so much easier with a router :)

to connect wirelessly you will need two things

1. a wireless router ... which is the hardware that "transmits" the data (actually it transmits and receives but its "main" operation is transmitting)

2. a wireless enabled computer OR a wireless card OR a wireless dongle -which is what you have- ... one of the above enables the computer to "receive" the data from the router (it also both receives and transmits but "mainly" receives)

therefore ... you connect your adsl modem to the wireless router and the router then can transmit the internet connection to all PCs with wireless capabilities (see point 2 above) in its range

of course you must also password protect your wireless connection because otherwise there is the possibility that anyone with a wireless capable computer in range would access your router and possibly your PC/files

routers are quite cheap , you can get a good one on eBay for less than $50

to do what the link in nasaboy007 says you will need 2 wirelessly enabled computers , no router , but the range will logically be shorter and you will need to have both computers ON whenever you need the wireless connection on the computer that is not attached to the adsl modem

What I have is a "USB Wifi adapter" I don't really know if it's the same thing as a dongle but I doubt it is. Here's what it looks like: http://www.amazon.com/WiFi-Wireless...5-9034042?SubscriptionId=0HDNR30NER68TK5AM082

I originally bought it for my NDSL, the seller told me that all I have to do is install the software, plug the adapter to my computer (with broadband connection), and the adapter will sort of "convert" the broadband to wireless.

So since my laptop is wifi-enabled, I'm trying to get wireless in my room from my desktop to my laptop. :D

I'm a hardware no0b, but I figured this is possible? :red:

it is basically a dongle ... this adapter makes your desktop wifi-enabled and therefore you can wirelessly connect your desktop to your laptop without a router (instructions for this are in the link nasaboy007 posted)

I thought you were trying to connect to the internet wirelessly with only 1 PC and the dongle

the only problem with this is that you will need to have your desktop ON to have internet on your laptop ... and maybe the range is smaller

(sidenote: since you say it doesn't work , have you installed the wifi dongle/adapter drivers from the accompanied CD ?)

Yup, I've installed it. I've followed the instructions really carefully.

A friend of mine told me that our campus has "disabled" wifi (if that's even possible).

supposing the campus provided internet through wifi , they could disable wifi (and the internet connection) ... that though would have nothing to do with the wifi connection of your desktop to your laptop

although there is probably equipment that could block wifi signals I doubt your campus has it (or that they have any reason to block wifi)

also the ISP can't block wifi , it has nothing to do with them ... it is like saying you have a phone line but the telephone company blocks cordless handsets

have you seen the video in nasaboy007's link ? ... have you set all settings as appropriate ? ... have you started/configured a new wireless connection on both the desktop and the laptop (while using the correct configurations/passwords) ?

Yup, I watched the video. But I still can't get it to work. I'll keep trying though, thanks.
