Sorry for the typo in the title... Should read: Is the FTP protocol ALWAYS slow?

I've noticed that no matter what webhost I'm using, I average about 3-5KB a second uploading my files. When I transfer large websites, it takes forever!

Is it just I have always used slow FTP servers or is the FTP protocol really THAT slow?

Could it be that your upload speed is slow?

It really depends on the host. FTP should be fast, though..

My internet speed is quite bad, but FTP is generally good.

A number of things could cause a slow ftp connection.

1) Your upload speed maybe low.
2) You maybe downloading so not much download bandwidth is there to account for your uploads (you need download bandwidth available so that your ftp client can receive replies from the server regarding packets received etc)
3) The ftp server has a restriction in place to limit upload speeds.
4) The ftp server is already busy and most of its bandwidth is already being eaten up.
5) You are not getting a decent or direct connection with the server (pinging the server might highlight this)

I find that FTP is slow when transferring a bunch of small files. Transferring large files, it hits my upload cap easily, but when transferring a bunch of small files, it never has time to reach my cap and often lags when switching between files.

It's most likely to be your ISP/internet package if the problem spans over different servers, as Bill said check your upload speed over at speedtest and post back :)

Personally because i am on 512kpb/s i average 20/30kbp/s up which is fine for FTP unless you are uploading software/music files I think.

I have Comcast (they just bought my ISP :() and I got 7967 down and 362 up. I can upload at 50KB/s, normally. You should be able to, too.
