If you own over 2000 hand-reg English dictionary 2-—to 3-word domain names, are you always in profit at the end of the financial year?
If yes Is it enough to cover the cost of living or do you have another job alongside domain investing?

Is having a large portfolio profitable? Heck yes!

Is having a large portfolio, consisting solely of two and three word hand regs, profitable? Only if you are really good at selecting and pricing, otherwise probably not.

Rather than hand regging 2000 domains, a person would be better off buying 100 4L.com imo

If I extrapolate my data from ~1300 names of hand reg / auction / closeouts to 2000 hand reg it‘s certainly possible to be profitable with enough to live a modest life outside a major city.

The hardest part to manage would be the inconsistency in income. You might make 5 figures one month then nothing for 2 or 3.

What type of quality 4L are you getting for $200-300 and what’s the average selling price and STR?

The key part of your question is that "2000 hand reg" domains. If that portfolio was built up over say the last 20 to 25 years, then yes. With careful investing, avoiding just about all the trashy extensions. Then probably with due diligence including watching the Drops + studying future developments in technology, having an investors mindset you'll probably end up with a good second income (not so sure about a Primary income).

The bottom line is -Your own intelligence level comes into play. Don't forget you need at least $20,000 a year just to earn a big fat Zero. Plus if your that good at domains over the last 20 years plus you would have probably moved onto the drop/auction/buyer market by now So now your either totally broke or living nicely off you wits.

Is it a good investment plan to start today. Absolutely Not with hand-registrations

What many people don’t realize: every single 4L.com can potentially sell for 4 or 5 figures! I have sold a bunch of absolute garbage 4L domains, such as BZQV.com, at BIN price.

Best of all, they hold their wholesale value. Buy a 4L on GoDaddy auctions for $300 and if it doesn’t sell after a few years you can sell it to another domainer for what you paid. Good luck doing that with a keyword domain.

You can have 2k or 20k domains, made up of whatever, are you playing numbers or offering quality? There are many "dictionary" that are useless in terms of terms that people will put a successful lasting brand on.

Don't ignore extensions that meet a match made in heaven. DN+TLD=CUPID'S ARROW

For having a second job alongside investing there is only a handful that make a living without it.

I’ve bought the vast majority of my names over the past 3-4 years and 2/3 of my sales are hand reg.

It's hard to choose right 3000 names and to hold them for years. Remember that:)

Your problem is you think of domains as commodity based on just having 2-3 English words. I.e. if a .com has 2-3 English words, it is profitable.

It takes way more parameters to consider to identify investment-grade domains (including the hand-reg, closeout, auction, private buy ones). And once you learn that skill, you can "commoditize" slices of your portfolio into "affinity baskets" and treat them pretty much as a commodity inventory to determine acquisition, pricing, landers, negotiation etc. strategies and approaches.

Dictionary is usually code word for bad domains. It’s like people can’t figure out something nice to say about a domain, well, it’s the dictionary. Some of the worst domains you’ll find trying to be sold here are the ones being marketed like that.

Nobody can give you a definitive yes or no on that without seeing actual names. Some people are just more skilled than others at hand regging and may be able to do it

You didn’t answer my question.

Today at GoDaddy auctions is QSEP.com. Current price is $151, final price will likely be closer to $250. I would buy that and put a BIN price of $3999. I would estimate STR of 3.25% (but this could go down if the .net or .org are dropped).

Thanks. I do need to dig into 4L more as it’s not an area I’ve played with.

I still think HR performs better — ~1% STR at ~$4k average and purchase price $3-10 — but the liquidity of 4L is appealing.

4L = asset. HR = lotto ticket. At the end of the day, a $3 HR costs the exact same to renew as the 4L, and if you ever need quick cash a 4L can be instantly liquidated at wholesale price.

Good question. Basically, if you're making more money from your domains than you’re spending on registration and renewal fees, then it's profitable. But how profitable really depends on your goals and how much time you want to put into it. A big portfolio can be great, but it’s also about the effort you’re willing to invest.

Not sure where you are getting the 3.25% STR, let alone with that kind of precision.

I have around 400 4Ls, most are of decent to great quality, and my STR is in 1.0-1.5% range.

I'm at 0.8% now with 500 names and low mid xxxx range sales. Hope to reach 1.2-1.5% this quarter.
I think around 1% is safe for most portfolios priced up to 5k, irrelevant of size, as long as some reasonable quality is there as well.

IMO, no, not always. In some circumstances, yes, but for how long?

Renewal fee will cut into your profit at the end of the year. If you're fortunate to be ahead of a trend and have good names, you'll likely make a decent profit. Having a large portfolio and frequent sales helps one to determine which domains are worth renewing. I dropped 90% of my hand reg'd domains after one year with rollover profit to renew the remainder for several years.

I own more than 2K hand reg domains, but I have a reason, if you don't, then the best path is to "go grow potatoes" in a kind manner of saying, so if I was not knowing what to do without having a reason on my back, then I would be wasting my time and money.
Why, because in almost 5 years of domain investing I sold only 4 domains totaling 2500K USD but I spent more than 60K on hand regs, so in conclusion without a reason you feed the daddy Registrars, there is no profit only loses, the domains I sold are not related to my reason of domaining, that is why I tell you this.
But if you learn domaining and focus on quality over quantity you can make a profit, you would have to detect the domains which will sell for sure but not reg the ones which will be dropped for sure.
edit 1: specify domaining period.
edit 2: rephrased words to make logic.

60k on hand regs and only sold a few domains. How does that make you feel ? How you gonna recover that money if you’re making such a loss ?

Oh, man. Normally, people of faith are good at monetizing it, but in your case it is leading you to huge loss. Almost $60k lost, not counting the lost opportunity cost, plus you are on the hook for another $22k/year.

I looked at your inventory and I have no clue why you keep most of those names. On top of that, the word logos don't correspond to domains at all and are just gibberish.
