Is it possible for the registrar to simply let it expire?

Ok as i was doing random whois searches on domaintools (for very good branded domains that were obviously registered) I came across a very good domain name worth much more than $10000 registered in 1993. Ok what i found interesting about this domain is that it expires less than one month from now...that`s a bit weird because i usually expect to see expiration dates for domains like that in the range of 2010-2017...not november 2007...is it possible that the registrant registered about 10000 more domains and forgot about this one ?i`ll find out anyway that day because i`ve even set my cellphone to ring on that day...but i want to know if it is worth the effort...i don`t have much experience with domaining...only sold 4 domains and made a profit of about $300
[EDIT] If i try to type the domain in my url it displays page not found...so it looks abandoned too...if the registrant had plans with this i guess he/she wold have parked it or atleast put some adsense

I would keep an eye on it, but it is probably going to be renewed. I don't have anything from 1993, but lots of stuff from 1996-1997, and all of the domains are on auto-renew. Usually the renewals take place a couple weeks before expiration on auto renewal.

The other part of the post is also worth noting... One of the biggest myths on the internet is that "everything needs to be a web page, and if there is no web page then the domain is not being used".

I have domains that I use for dns servers and mail that have no web site. The ICANN requirements state that we should have our DNS servers answer SOA for the domain, but not what type of service is available on the domain... just SOA is required.

It could be a business that has ceased activity. Nothing is forever in this world.

yes i searched google for the company that registered that domain and came up across nothing...there was also info about the site where the nameservers where supposed to be (it was the registrant`s lastname.com), but when i entered that in my url i was redirected to a joke site so every info i have untill now say that this domain is going to expire

chances are if it does get dropped it will end up in the auctions (if its that good)

If you type it in to www.archive.org/index.php you "may" be able to find out if the name has just been gathering dust for a few years or if its recently been abandoned.

Either way, if you really want any chance of getting it find out where it is currently registered and place a backorder at their partner company (if they have one).

Good luck :)

Tucows have their own auctions: https://ddirect.domainauctionservice.com/
You may find the domain there in due time, but I have heard they are cherry-picking and may keep the best names to themselves....

If it's registered in 1993, most likely someone will be interested in it and will bid for it on Tucows' auction website, so your chances of buying at reg. fee are close to none.

Nowdays all dropping domains[com/net/info] are taken by drop catchers. They test it out and if there are no bidders, automatically it gets dropped.

Few days ago, these 3 premium hand.info, week.info, dig.info were snapped by drop catchers.
