is it illegal to purchase domain names based on brands like..

kona makes bikes

so a domain like konabikes.com or in case of fila like filashoes.com , other examples - adidasfootballs.com ,
is it illegal ?

second example
lets say there is a shopping site , like amazon.com

and i go on purchasing amazon.org ( if it is available ) will it be seen as illegal or misuse of brand names ?

third example

facebook.com if i purchase

facebookcom.com yes it seems spammy but this domain would get maximum direct searches .

and considering these factors do these domain have any value if they are bought ?

please answer these questions in all 3 examples that i gave

I wouldn't register these. Big companies are really sensitive when it comes to trademarks and domain names, so in any case your domain can be dropped due to TM issues.


anything *trademark*.*** is potentially violation of TM.

No, registering those kinds of domains is not "illegal". But if the domains use registered trademarks like those, the trademark holder can demand that you stop using them or give the domains to him. They can also threaten legal action against you, but that rarely happens.

You could probably get away with registering a domain like amazon.org, but only because is also the name of a river and a certain type of woman. That is, there are other uses besides the trademark. But I would not try to use that domain to sell ANYTHING since that could indicate bad faith and get you into trouble.

you can use domainerschoice.com for all sensitive domains. Shit hits the fan and they tell you about it and move domains to their colleague in german.

I love domainerschoice.com but very few of my domains need that kind of protection.
