When .Com is not available, what is best to use to sell a single name of a river that I discovered by accident? .IO or .XYZ or does it make no difference other than price? Is cheaper the best move or am I best registering both? The .io version is appraised at twice the value as the XYZ.

Probably neither if you don't see existing usage for the name.

Plus, let's say you buy it for $1 and price it at $100. They can still buy the .io for cheaper.

Same is true in reverse.

LOL, great point about buying it for cheaper. I pride myself in looking at all the angles before I do something but in Domains unfortunately I miss the obvious which you pointed out. Thanks. Would a name of an Italian River that has a Wikipedia page be worth it for a Non com in your opinion?

Depends on the name.

Names of rivers isn't a great filter. Some rivers have great names, bad names, and everything in-between.
