Invested in my first Domain!

Hello domainers,

I invested in my first domain!

I gave myself a starting budget of $300 total, where I would allocate $100 for expired/deleted domains. I invested in this domain:

investingcap.com

I bought it for $35.41 from GoDaddy; now I have $64.59 left to invest in expired/deleted domains.

I looked at some of the sold domains, keywords, and appraisal tools on Flippa, GoDaddy and NameBio, which helped me see a much higher value in this domain.

I noticed that the appraisal tool for GoDaddy gives really high estimates for most of the domains I put in. How should I best use the GoDaddy appraisal tool? Definitely do not want to "over valuate" a domain name.

What do you guys think? Do you guys have any advice on how to valuate the domains? Any resources, advice, or appraisals would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

@rcdomaininvestor

Make it $282 and keep $18 to handreg a couple well thought of names.
How should I best use the GoDaddy appraisal tool?
Don't use it.
Any resources
You're using the most valuable resource. Just go around the forum, read, learn, before investing in more names. Also check namebio.com, it is a public record for domain sales (not all of them though, also sometimes not very accurate).

edit: forgot to congratulate you on your first domain investment. Good luck!

Thank you for your advice Jay, definitely will dig deeper and look into the NamePro Forums! :)

Welcome @chapoteaur - nice to have you at NamePros. Regarding valuation of domains, that comes with experience. I've been at this for 8 months now and have learned a great deal from experimenting with buying and selling. I think the GoDaddy appraisal tool is useful in giving a general idea of a domain's value, but not something to be relied on exclusively. Also, reading the reported sales here on NP and on NameBio will help you get an idea on how to valuate domains. For me, that's been one of the more mystifying parts of domain investing - but it gradually gets easier.

Do you have an idea what to do with it? What potential end users to target? Or how to develop the name and live off it? :xf.wink:

For end user, I was thinking about a business/individual who is passionate about investing. I did not think much about how to further develop it, so thank you for this pointer!

for a first domain its pretty good...
Agreed (y)

This said, it's not a name that will be easy to find a motivated end user for, as is, undeveloped, IMHO.

I suggest checking if it was registeted previously. If so, then check wayback machine if it was developed. This might help with ideas on developing / redeveloping it...

Might be a good idea to check investmentcap.com / net (both registered) whether there are any sites there. Plus Google both investing cap and investment cap to see what pops up!

Good luck! :xf.smile:

NameBio will help you get an idea on how to valuate domains. For me, that's been one of the more mystifying parts of domain investing - but it gradually gets easier.

Be careful using past sales figures on sites like namebio for your valuation. The vast majority of the trading of domains is done investor to investor. Therefore these are mostly wholesale prices and are not indicative of what an end-user would pay (retail).

In the end, most of a domain's retail value is derived from what an end-user is willing to pay according to their perceived value of the domain in their context

Figure out if you want to be a domain wholesaler (selling domains other wholesalers) or a retailer (selling domains to end-users).

It would be desirable to form your own strategy when purchasing names. The fact that the domain is delightful does not mean that it is worthy, or that somebody will want to buy it.

To be successful in this area, you have to learn a lot (best of experienced members of this forum).

I want you a lot of success in further work.
