TM's aside, Nintendo released the official name for the next generation Nintendo games console: Wii (as in "we").

"Introducing... Wii.
As in "we."

While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that seperates videogame players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people playing it. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything."

The only thing that does help the case is that Nintendo registered wiimagazine and wiinews.com as well as nintendowii.com. They've done the same thing with GameCube when it was released. They regged GameCubeNews.com.

Also, they never registered any domains for the Revolution code name. So it's a good sign for Wii domainers. :)

But they never used the Revolution name for the system

Right, if they wouldn't use Wii then they wouldn't register the names either.

Just out of curiosity.. which of your names are getting the most views? In my case, wiionline is outperforming 2 to 1.. I thought wiiconsole would generate the most views.

If this is true, then I feel sorry for everyone who bought a domain.

I doubt they have done this type of approach. .eu domains are also registered such a wiinews.eu and wiionline.eu.
Of course they could be very deceptive in also regging these names. But i doubt it.

Update: This just in from Nintendo on the subject of the missing Wii trademark: โ€œNintendo has filed many trademark applications for Wii. Trademark Web sites often take time to update, and you can expect the Wii trademarks to appear shortly.โ€
From the bottom of the page of the link above....so I do kind of hope it's true...this part I mean...not the part about the hoax....

I don't see the rationale in creating what I'd perceive as ultimately negative buzz.. and why screw with domainers when they (Nintendo) could have easily regged and TMed everything they'd wanted before the release of the official name?

Then again, there was that other report of an official name release that turned out not to be true.. hmmm

revolution.nintendo.com exists, yet wii.nintendo.com does not. scary

Any publicity is good publicity..... and its working, everyone on the internet is talking about Wii, even millions of dollars worth of advertising couldnt create this much buzz. I may be wrong (and I probably am) but I dont think Wii is what revolution will ultimatly be called.

I guess we shall have to wait till E3 to see.

Anyway, good luck to everyone that bought a domain :yell:

Haven't read the entire thread, but be careful guys, unless Nintendo has changed their ways, they are super protective of their marks.

On a side note, I think it's a terrible name in general.

My first thought when I read the name in a head line was "world war 2"

Then I thought it was pronounced "why" lol

Have you noticed that in articles, when they write the name for the first time they very often add (pronounced 'we') following it, that can't be a good sign.

Have any of you done a search for "wii" on google? I was quite surprised to see Nintendo would pick a name like WII when so many organizations use that term:

www.wii.gov.in ~ Wildlife Institute of India

www.wii.ca ~ Williamson Industries inc.

wii.dk/ ~ Wii.dk - web design portfolio

www.wii.org/ ~ Wellness Institute International Hawaii

Also, it has connotations of the World Wars. I guess we'll see...

I didn't reg any names because by the time I read this thread, all the premium ones were gone and no sense regging a 2nd rate one. :)

Wow, I wonder... I could see a company doing a stunt like this but somehow it doesn't seem like a very "Nintendo" thing to do. Either way I am glad I have only registered one. It's too bad we can't include question marks in domain names...

Talking to the clerk at Rhino Games this afternoon and, like most others, he "hates" the name.. I personally can't fathom why Nintendo might pull a switcheroo.. it doesn't seem like good marketing to me. You can certainly create a buzz without pulling the rug out from under everyone..

Just got wiigames / wiiforum. :)

Besides these two, I have two more domains pending, and my collection will be finalized. :)

I like the name. Revolution smacks too much of the Matrix IMO.
This (odd) name will give it more of an identity methinks.
