A mnemonic brand is a brand that is very easy to remember and synergistic. It involves packaging a Toll Free Number + Vanity or Brand Domain Name.

Like 1-800-CONTACTS with $200 million in annual sales in 2009, owning this type of branding power can be a lucrative.

On July 6th, the FCC released the 855 toll-free extension after 10 years.

Why is this big news?

Imagine if it was the first new TLD that’s been introduced in 10 years. Then imagine if nobody else even knew about it yet and they were opening up the request process. That’s why I believe this is a rare opportunity to be at the right place at the right time.

Do any of you have plans for investing in this type of business?...

Before any poor newbies get suckered into this ala .mobi, .tel, 3D, Reem Island, k-e-y-w-o-r-d, etc... realize that it is always the same core group of people that get too excited over this stuff.

855 might be new, but 888, 877 and 866 are not. Nobody cared about those, yet the rush is on for 855? Please.

This is a business. Not a gut feeling!

It All About Business

Hello DubDubDubDot. (I hope I got that right). The toll-free business has a real demand in the marketplace right now as it helps businesses to improve their ROI up to (40%-150%). Just watch the next 'service or product' based tv commercial and notice their contact number!... These are usually Toll-free vanity numbers based on one of the (800,888,877,&866) prefixes.

Nobody's demanding that you buy a telephone number, especially if your intentions are not to use it for business purposes. Rather, it's a chance to invest in your domain brands, while gaining more market exposure.

Thanks,

No need to preach the benefits of having a toll-free number.

Let me repeat what I said and you so conveniently ignored:

The problem here is that there is only one decent end user for these domains: the owners of the 1-8xx phone numbers. If they don't want your domain you are SOL because there is pretty much no reseller activity.

That being said, I have never attempted to register a 18xx domain and contact the company behind the matching phone number; but my gut feeling is that few would be interested since 888, 877, 866 and 855 are highly unlikely to be a part of the brand. So they would be using their CompanyName.com.

You pointed to 1800Contacts and 1800PetMeds, but that is their brand. 800 is strong. Those others are not. Those others are what much smaller companies settle for when they just want a toll-free number.

With all due respect, I did not start this thread to get in a debate match with you as there is no need for me to defend the toll-free business; The results speaks for itself.

And what do you mean by the following? -
the same core group of people that get too excited over this stuff.

I'd care to say that those comments are stereotypical and a bit condescending!

Totally unacceptable. End of discussion.

Mods please close this thread!
