Intel, the world's largest maker of computer chips, will invest over $1 billion in India. Of this, $800 million will go into business expansion, mostly research, over five years, and another $250 million will be spent on setting up venture capital (VC) fund.
Intel chairman Craig Barrett however ruled out chip manufacturing in India, at least for now, although its global rival AMD has decided to extend chip technology for a $3 billion plant, which is to be set up by SemIndia, a consortium of NRIs.
Barrett said Intel was in discussions with the government to set up a plant but nothing has been finalised. Intel chips power over 80% of world's PCs and the situation is believed to be even better for it in India, where AMD is yet to make a mark.
Barrett said that if Intel decided to start manufacturing here, it would not involve any third party, like AMD has done with SemIndia.
