Hello Fellas,

Anyone tell me please, is a .net ex preferable to a .info ex - when the site is offering free information of a type?

Thanks.
charbar.

.net is always better then .info. :)

Sure. First try .net. If not available then go .info

.info - To me, the extention MUST fit. Eg. lawFAQ.info fits MUCH better than lawfaq.net - how is it a network?

IMO, I would value the name lower.

In the long run the .net will be the best bet of these two. .info is your last resort if you cannot get the .net version. Try and stick to the top TLD names always. This will make it easier for your visitors to find you.

.info is newer to the domain world than .net so choose .net ;)

HOW can .net be a Better Choice for INFOrmation sites then .INFO
Put yourselves in the shoes of the average internet user
You know the ones you should be aiming the sites at.

They still often think that
.com for Commercial
.net for NetWork related
.org for Organisations
.info for Information

Im not so sure they think .net for network...talking about the average web surfer here (not webmasters or domainers), and I doubt they know what any of the extensions "really mean". Its all about what there use to seeing.

Personally, I think .net is a wasted extension...its the poor mans .com, and id imagine a lot of popular .net sites still loose significant traffic to the .com equivalent.

I hope .info gets more and more popular. We need some major companies to become household names with a .info. Its a ripping ext if you ask me..and very underutilized.

In your context, .info seems more appropriate, though on a general basis .info and .net are more or less of the same value.

Most non-ccTLD domain extensions other than .com almost always lose significant traffic to their .com equivalent. RackShack.net before (before they became ev1Servers), MovableType.org and a bunch of others being examples of people forgetting regularly.

But that's the price you pay for not being able to use the .com, and still a worthwhile limitation if you like the name.

.net's are unfortunately caught in between, since people don't distinguish them for 'network'-based sites these days (except to those who are familiar, which are relatively few compared to the mainstream), and many people use .org instead.

If a site is offering any kind of information free or paid I think .info would be the most suitable extension for that site. :)

I think that .info is not that bad :imho:
Anyway, if both .info and .net are available, I'd reg both

IMO .net is better than .info.

depend of site and depend of information. if it is some global information info is preferable. diet.info is better than diet.net IMHO

net is definitely better then info...cos last year, one would get a .info domain for free..and that lowers the value of .info domains...so its better to get .info

What a load of Drivel
First you say get a .Net is better than .info ,than you say get .info because they were free and that lowers the value.

If .Net's or .Com's were Free ,would that lower the value ? NO!
Yet the ultimate aim of half of the NPer's is to acquire enough NamePros Dollars to get a free .com or .net
Does that reduce the Value of .Com or .net ? No!

The other half spend Vast quantities of time trying to find the cheapest .Com or .net Reseller/Registrar or the latest "Magic Coupon Code" for a $1 discount .
Does that reduce the Value of .Com or .net ? No!
What does does lower the value of any Name and TLD ,is all the mindless
Twaddle posted about values of various TLD's based on stupid and baseless prejudices.

The original Question was "Is an .info OK for an INFORMATION Site"
Of course it is. More than a .Net would be.

.info was given free a period of tiem ago, causing its value to drop.

Economically, get .net

But if it really really fits well with .info, then go ahead.
