i know that .info is used for informational sites, but what do you guys think about using .infos for portalish sites. a portal site isn't exactly commercial site, it's just a directory of sites. Can't that be viewed as informational?

For example, i picked up a domain a while back during the free info bonanzas , MarketFlea.info. I was going to use it as a directory/information stuffs about different shops and markets. but i was wondering about just making things easy on myself and turning it into a shopping mall portal.

would that be contrary to the .info extension. My domain isn't selling anything, but it is being used as a directory portal for sites that are.

:guilty:

I don't see why you couldn't use if for that purpsose. After all, your site is going to be a site with a database of links to other sites. I suppose that could be considered informational. I don't know what else it could be considered to tell you the truth. I say go for it.

Matches the extension nicely, IMHO.

Portals should be ok for .info.. I don't think they necessarily need to be strictly informational, but at least have that "bent"...

Agreed - Most portals Have information on a certain Niche/Subject anyway - It may be just a "Local" Portal but you are still providing some Info within it aren't you ? Maybe weather, news, and etc ...

The question is what is 'best fit', I'm 100% for directional portals and guides for .INFO. It takes the stink out of .COM that has turned into nothing more than a PPC graveyard increasingly over the past 4 years. Black hats are just sucking the blood from marketers out of this arcane business model with more advanced click bot scripts.

The $64,000 question.. which is why you see so much .info dreck here for appraisal... the free .info's tainted the pot. Hopefully any upcoming drops will see .info get on back on track as an informational ext.

I absolutely detest made up .info domains that obviously don't fit the ext..

:bingo: Been waiting to hear someone say what I am sure a lot of people think.

:imho: search engines are a great tools but one must wade through a lot of garbage when looking for anything which cannot be stated in very specific terms. The consolidating of links to information in addition to providing direct information on any subject is a perfectly valid use of the .info space.

Want to see examples -- Google site: .info xxxxx where xxxxx is a subject or keyword etc.

A little overstated, (for effect, I assume) but nevertheless: :bingo:
If Afilias really wants to promote .info, they should lobby to have a user friendly method of filtering and/or prioritizing searches by ext, (ie a short list of tlds w/ a check box, or numbered sequence next to the search field).
That would be the quickest way, that I can think of, of bringing awareness to the exts and their respective purposes. "You mean that .info is for informational websites and .biz is the way to go if I'm looking for b2b and localized business? Wow! What a concept!"

.commers, the world over, would be breaking out in hives and having some nasty reflux, the day that plans were announced for that new search feature.

I absolutely detest made up .info domains that obviously don't fit the ext..
A waste of money, (or free info domains), IMO. Likewise, informational terms that are used w/ .biz are laughable. How the heck could someone justify their b2b/localized business or a site w/ something like CosmicAwareness.biz for a handle?? :-/ :|

In a sense, anything you could post on a website would be information of some sort. It's one of the most versatile gTLD's there is.
