I was reading this morning and came across a great article.
India is in the midst of a phenomenal internet boom. According to Mary Meeker's 2016 Internet trends report released in April 2016, India's Internet user growth rate is four times the global user growth rate. India now has 277 million Internet users surpassing the US and second only to China, the report says. Of course, there is plenty of room for growth given that only about 22 percent of the Indian market is penetrated. The number of web users in India is expected to see a twofold rise at 730 million by 2020 against 350 million at the end of 2015, according to 'The Future of Internet in India' report by Nasscom and Akamai Technologies.
Greater awareness and an orientation towards technology have an impact on online presence. According to a Zinnov report on the β€˜State of the Domain Name Industry in India,’ services & manufacturing enterprises are key segments buying domain name to establish online presence. Also, not surprisingly, states with a high penetration of internet users indicate a higher domain name adoption in the country. For example, Maharashtra, Delhi/NCR and Karnataka account for 38 percent of the registered domain names in India.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I guess that explains the endless spam I receive for seo offers, web design, etc.

India may have surpassed the US in the number of Internet users. But, and this is a big butt, The buying power and commercial value of the US users is beyond comparison. This is not to say that Indian users are to be discounted, but there will be a long way to go for a fair comparison based on numbers only. Hopefully, the Indian market/users will mature and grow in the same fashion as the Chinese market, but due to the cultural and economic difference it, it will take longer but it will eventually come sooner than later.

Hi All,

I am from India. The problem with .IN domains are,

> First there are almost 88 languages spoken through out the country. So most of local business choose their name in native language(Tamil,Hindi,Telugu,Malayalam..etc) which is obviously making domain brokering Hard. Only software and E-commerce firms going for English keyword domains.

Example in sites Tamil language: www.anbutamil.com, www.vinavu.com

> There are many startups from 2012. But i don't see any company spend more money in Domain Names except few due to lowest value rupee of against dollar.

Considering they have a population of over 1 billion, this is normal.

At the moment Indian end users for co.in/.in that are prepared to front up a good price for a good name are like the holy grail.

Resellers pump out the very low $xxx offers on good names in the hope of picking up a gem cheaply, often via Sedo in the hopes it may be pushed to auction and there are no other bidders.

FYI Over the years I have sold more than 1000 .co.in/.in names.

Thank you for sharing.

A lot of this, infact, has to do with how Internet usage has grown four folds over the years due to shift in how major venture capitalists saw potential in the Indian market which was further helped by the economic policies of the government of India by introducing Digital India initiative, Start up India, Make in India, etc.

Growth will continue to happen, and we also see uptick in efforts from National Internet Xchange of India (.in Registry) coming out to promote .in domain names by introducing Social Media and TV Advertising Campaigns after years of existence.

Future looks promising and our combined efforts of pushing Indian domain name industry forward have also started fructifying.

Now what does this say for the future value of .in?
Hopefully not the same fate as .us. .US will hopefully have it's time soon. :)

Often I get inquiries on my names from India, the offers rarely go beyond $100-150 US.

Anyone who is not investing in .in will miss out big. The Indian internet infrastructure is being built out at a very, very fast pace and new users are coming online very quickly. Sure everyone likes .com they like .com in China and Germany and UK, but i'm pretty sure .cn, .de and .uk are very valuable. Many are online on mobiles so short domains are especially valuable. Being from Canada, when looking for products online I like to see .ca because I know the company is from Canada. When I see .com I assume it is in the US.

.in is a no brainer. If you can't see that, you are blind!

Let me add and make this bold projection :

.IN with increasing traffic as a TLD will be in rare company with .COM and .CN . It will be the 3rd or even 2nd MOST VALUABLE TLD . For english keywords, it would definitely be the 2nd most valuable behind .COM .

Note: I have been invested in .COM since 1998 and .IN since 2005, so yes am biased.

Thank you for your post and insight. Are there certain types of names that will sell the best in India in the future? We own names like i80.in etc Thank you in advance!

Very good question. I am heavily invested in .COM & .IN domain names, and this is how see Indian market as well.

Just like everyone out there, Indian endusers love .COM as their first choice for a brand name and if first choice is not available, they'd fall back on .in tld. Of course this also completely depends on whether their business caters to local or global market.

Everything has a market in India, and the reason I see Domain Name investors not from within the country are heavily invested in the cctld. These are some of the well known names in our industry like Nat Cohen from Telepathy Inc, Stephen Wilson from Keyword Acquisitions, Inc., Alex Kogan from Heaven Domains just to name a few who see potential in .IN domain names.

I post a regular series on my Facebook profile where I publish offers received on my domain names and you could follow that to know what sort of names are receiving interest from Indian endusers here: #PolitelyRejected

@Rinkuji Most Indians are very miserly, they do not want to invest any money in short and rare domains, unlike the Chinese, americans and other western countries where rare items are valued. Did not get any offer for lll.in domains listed for sale[/
Good for India but I think China has most of the money though
in my opinion India is few years behind China .. India is worlds 3rd largest economy as per PPP...so there is lot of money when one focused on volumes .. same sales model of west not applicable for India .. India's digital awareness a way lower until few years before ..but it's picking up fast .. ignoring India's market as as good as those ignored China market in 2012 or 13 .. obviously there is a room for all domain extensions.. there are companies who can afford premium names like word.com or lll.com .. or mid sized companies prefer .in due to budget constraints... small companies want premium .com but obviously they can't afford .. so obviously .in will emerge as a volume leader .. it's just a matter of few years but bound to happen .. just my humble opinion

India is where the US was in 1999, I see similar trends going on. The boom in .IN is a matter of businesses understanding the value of online spending and growth in ecommerce, which by the way is just taking off, just like we went through starting around 1999. The next 10 years we probably saw the biggest rise in .com prices.

2017-2030 , I expect to see a dramatic increase in online spending in India which will drive online competition from all business, which will drive domain price growth for .in domains. Between Google.co.in, Amazon.in, Irctc.co.in and large popular websites, the dot .in tld receives over 1 billions visits a day. (Thats pretty rare company). So the traffic is there, the .in brand is solid and growing, the one factor we are waiting for is the actual SPEND online, which will come.

This isn't rocket science, we have seen this play out in many countries already, execpt India is a little different. English keywords will be huge in India, not that different from the US. How do I know this, have been running websites with traffic from India for over 15 yrs.

While the domaining industry has been distracted with these hypes or little new gtlds's, some of us have been focussed on .IN - something thats going to be around for a while :)

The authorities actually caught the guy that was the owner of the very large spam operation behind the IRS fraud.

I wonder if .in will become what .cn is in China or if they prefer only .com names there.
