Anyone know of a program in which a teen can enroll in a ZipCar or FlexCar type program? I currently go to school two hours away from when I work and when my schedule reaches full time in school this summer it'll be hell and high waters for me on a daily basis to get to work. I have to run on foot to catch the railroad and then pay for a cab from the railroad to get to work. I'll be able to do it, but I'm figuring this is going to stress me out.

It's a really good job so I'm willing to do this for it, but I'd like to make life a bit easier for both my morning, afternoon, and home commute as I live two hours from school while by car its only 15 minutes, literally, and the school is 30 minutes by car from my work as opposed to two by railroad and cab. Forget about the bus.

I cannot afford car insurance on my own and I have no support from my parents on getting tied to their already existing policy to save me from having to pay 20 grand a year. I can afford a car though with gas and daily maintenance. Getting my own actual car is not a viable choice though because of new driver's insurance cost at my age.

Thanks to anyone who knows of such a program and thanks to those who do not.

Did you say you pay $20.000 a year for insurance? Did I understand this correctly? And I bitch about the $500 a year I pay here in Portugal. Boy what a bunch of insurance crooks you have there! Amazing!!!

I live in New York City. I am 17. I am a totally new driver. The cheapest insurance rate possible for me is 6 thousand every 6 months with the crappiest car. With a somewhat new car it comes out to 20k.

I've heard a lot of these sites to be scams. They seem like just informational sites requiring a "membership" for access.

Yea... I thought of that, but its not very convenient. Here will be my commute without a car.

Wake up 6 am to get to school 9 am. It'll take me close to 2 and a half hours because I'll end up going through three boroughs to get to my school on the subway.
Directly after school at 5, the minute I get out, I must rush to the LIRR to catch the first 5 o clock train to get to work by 6.
I must then take a cab to work from the railroad because the buses at that transfer point like to come whenever they want despite what the schedule says.
Then after work nearing midnight I must then wait for the bus that will come every hour as there will be no more cabs in that part of town at that time.
I'll get back to the railroad and wait for a train that runs every half an hour.
I'll get to the railroad stop and transfer to my subway route which will then take another half hour.
I'll end up arriving at home at 2 - 3 am with homework to do and I have to wake up in 4 hours.

While with a car.

I can get to school in 15 minutes so I can wake up 8 and get to work by 9 after getting ready.
I can get to work in 30 minutes after getting out.
I can then come straight home in 30 minutes.
Finish my homework and get enough sleep to do it over again.

I am sorry my friend but your reply shows me only one thing, the society goes down...where has the spirit gone with this generation? :(

Sorry if i sound harsh but that's just spoiled...

How about a moped or electric or gas scooter? Some don't require insurance and used can be bought cheaply. With gas prices the way they are, may may have to eventually resort to this.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Keenen, this would be a great solution to your problem.

Good luck, whatever you decide.

$6,000 every 6 months? Sorry, but that can't be correct. There's just no way...

Yeah, $6k for 6 months does sound ridiculous - I'd love to see a copy of that quote.

Shop around... you'd be surprised to see how much the quotes will vary from company to company.

It is not convenient because a lot of trains are elevated or underground and a lot of our stations lack elevators as only some are handicap equipped. Plus I have no where to park my bike without the lock getting clipped and taken to lost and found. There is no bike parking at my job which is a mall thats located off of a highway.

This is a good idea, but I'd have to use the freeway with whatever vehicle I have. In general the mopeds or scooters that go this fast must be registered and insured in NYC.

This is true. I've tried 4 different companies. Geico, Esurance, All State and Progressive.

I would take the biggest piece of crap car ever. As long as it has 4 wheels, runs and passes inspection, I'll drive it. I can afford to purchase something on craigslist at 600 - 2000 bucks, but its the insurance I cannot afford because to get insurance alone without any parents it is tons expensive no matter what car I get. And if the car is too old they wont even insure it. If my parents would stop being jerks, put their precious house in a trust and tie me onto their policy I'd save a crap load of money on insurance. Their whole reason for not putting me on is their fear of losing the house if I do something stupid because I am the ever so impressionable teen who will start drinking and get behind the wheel of a car because all teens are like that. For all they know I am the extreme opposite of everything they think of me. So I get the BS everyday that my parents are trying to make me a better more responsible driver when I am never able to pilot a vehicle even when my parent is in the car. I haven't driven a car since I got my license period, but yet me observing them drive is supposed to prepare me to be the best driver in the world when I grow up according to them and my grandparents. I don't get their logic.

I've gotten into this whole thing way too much before and I don't want to get in it again. I just need some method of getting a car and if anyone would know any program like ZipCar for teens or some cheap car pool service in NYC out to Long Island, I'd be happy because I'm in no position to pay these ridiculous car insurance rates just because I'm a new, young, driver.

I think you are not being too thoughtful here, you may be the best driver in the world, all it takes is someone who is uninsured or drunk or just careless, causing your accident and you and your parents are possibly left a heap of trouble.

I did not drive until I could afford it, progressing from walking, cycling, public transport through moped, motorcycle and car. Look for paid lifts with a mate, work collegue or girlfriend. I too had school and work, although you do seem to be spending a lot of time travelling to and from and this is why you need transport, get a job near home or school?

If it truly is the other people they are afraid of like they tell me they are hypocrites because then they are saying that all of those drunk and/or uninsured drivers don't exist or completely change when they're on the road.

My job is amazing and extremely hard to get. The company I now work for, according to some third party statistics, higher 1 out of every 17 people they interview. Its also coupled very well with my major.
