My hosting has been down for about 2 weeks now. ALL my sites are hosted using this company and I'm getting really annoyed!!

Who? TheUnmetered.com - not recommended!

I've tried emailing them but as their hosting is down too emails don't get thru. They've recently been taken over, and I was told the current business model was failing so they have to introduce new monthly fees. I had previously paid a set amount to have hosting for life.
I had decided I was going to move host anyway, and just as I was preparing to do so this happens. I had a reseller account and hosted quite a few sites, and I didn't get time to download them all to my hard drive. I was going to transfer all the sites to my new host first.

Now, I know I should have backups of all the sites I was hosting, but I didn't and, of course, I regret it :td:

Now I'm pretty much stuck, and I have to wait until the hosting is back up before I can do anything much!! Not good.
As its been down for so long I'm getting a bit worried that something rather more serious has happened. Or is it possible this is simply a prolonged period of server downtime?
Anyone else ever experienced something like this before??!

Sorry to hear that. 2 weeks of downtime is definitely unacceptable... if it does by chance come up... grab your backups and run.

I feel pretty bad for you. It happened to me also, but fortunately I had backups. You should make it a habit of it. May I suggest Polurnet.com for reliable service, I am using them right now, and I do not think I will have to find another host again. Good luck with your next host.

I would never recommend those "hosting for life" packages. This is why. It tends to be the hosting company's life, rather than your life.

I am surprised that they thought anyone would pay them a monthly fee, after they had already paid for "life." I think that everyone would either refuse to pay or just leave. I doubt what they did is even legal.

That's a good joke, and these are usually one-day one-man companies.

Too good to be true offers are usually indeed "too good to be true"

You're all right. It was foolish to not have backups of my sites, but I was not anticipating this and was just about to transfer all the sites to a new host anyway.

While I'm here, if you can offer me a reseller hosting account please PM me with details. I may require one for the next few months, but I do not think I'll need it for much after that.
