Wtf is up with folks wasting millions of gallons of clean water for ALS?

Just donate your money quietly and move on. Most here donate quietly to registrars and move on, so it's business as usual, but for a great cause!

I would say it's a great way to raise awareness, other than just saying "hey look at ALS". This clearly has the media attention and has raised more money than previous attempts.

My point exactly. In the last couple of weeks I've heard quite some outrageous rants ranging from "wasting water when the little africans have nothing to drink" to "what about all the people that just make a video and don't send money". I won't go into depth as to how illogical those arguments are. At the end of the day the campaign worked miracles and the gathered donations speak for themselves. ;)

And what about all that wasted electricity to make those ice cubes just to dump them on the ground?

Watching how who does what is pretty revealing. it's a new type of reality show with a good cause behind it. I wish more diseases were being targeted.

But do you consider this wasted electricity when you make ice cubes for yourself? Heck, I can go to the supermarket nearby and buy a bag of ice - should I consider everything involved in its making? If I do that I'd have to take into consideration everything I buy and stop eating/drinking overall. Not to mention that when I dump a bucket of ice water over a grass field I don't really consider this water wasted :)

When you buy or make ice for your ice tea your not wasting the ice.

But if I'm watering my grass its a waste? :)

You can hand pump the water and not use electricity.

Then again - what if I bought a bag of ice? Same electricity is still used regardless if I use it in my ice tea or on my lawn ;)

Well then that doesn't evolve the Ice bucket challenge, so nothing is waisted because of the challenge, so you're good.

You're not watering your grass to promote a good cause. You don't piss resources on one hand while standing proud for giving on the other.

On a more positive note, sales of ice trays have skyrocketed.

Couldn't agree more. We can simply donate without wasting a good amount of water. Just a thought.

The point of the water is symbolic. When you pour ice water on you, your brain cannot comprehend what is that sudden change and for a few seconds you feel like you are paralyzed. That is how an ALS patient feels all the time and that is where the idea for this type of challenge came in the first place. Apart from that of course anyone can donate to whatever cause without doing anything else apart from...well...donating :)

I find it a great reflection of societal standards when something that likely began with great intentions resulted in people using it as an opportunity to 'glory whore' themselves online with no intention of even learning about what ALS (let alone donate).

Yeah you wont see me pouring ice water over my head anytime soon. Anything for attention I guess.

I couldn't agree more with ..its far better to donate quietly then doing all this ice water challenge ..remember African kids dying from drought & dirty water infection ?

I volunteered my dog, to raise money for the local animal shelter instead, lol....

My wife and I make doggie treats which we sell at festivals, and we've started giving a portion of each sale to the local shelter. It's a No Kill shelter, so it needs a lot of help.

Hey I was going to give her a bath anyway, and it was kinda funny, imo. And no, I didn't put cold water on her :-,.
