Hi friends,

I hope everyone is well. I want to gift a friend a .com domain name and possibly some means to host a basic website.

As this is a gift, I do not want to spend too much, but would like to give something real and reliable.

Any suggestions please, I am looking to do it ASAP.

Thanks,
desidude

I have found that giving a domain as a gift is like giving a plant. If you give somebody a plant for a present, it is likely to become kind of a liability for them since it requires attention. If you give a plant for a present, you are likely to fond it dead on your next visit.

If you must give a domain name as a present, be prepared to take on the job of renewing it every year yourself. I would give a hand-regged domain and maybe buy a couple of years of fees so that the person has a bit of a longer time to grow into it.

Register the domain yourself, preferably for as many years as you can afford. Keep the domain in your account or a sub-account if your registrar allows it (name.com does, for example).
Set up an account at a place like Virb.com (paid) or Tumblr.com (free) that the recipient can then easily customise and update themselves.
Follow instructions to point the domain to said service.

Thanks friends,

Which is a good site to just register the domain name for maybe 1 or 2 years to start with?

It will be a .com domain.

Is tumblr a site where they can host a website or just a blog?

The friend I am gifting the .com domain to is a photographer, looking to put up photo sets of their work.

Thanks,

internet.bs is good and cheap. Namecheap, Name.com, and dynadot are all good choices as well.

godaddy gives free ad-supported webhosting with their domains.

if you have the budget, you could buy their standard webhosting.
