Okay so I've got this big thing in front of my face. How do I host my website off of it. Whats the proccess in getting it on the net. And letting people host their sites off it?

:)
I sound like a total newbie just new to hosting sites

what os is it running? if any?

also depending on what your hosting you would probably need the bandwith/connection speed to support it

I haven't bought it yet.
Most likely XP.

let's suppose 50 bandwidth/20gb

Now I have the server.
How does namepros host it's own site.

name pros is running off a linux box with cpanel

im guessing the server is stored in a datacenter

what you can do is download apache, set up php etc etc on it and run it that way or you can use iis if you wish to get asp support

you cant use cpanel on a windows box at the moment its in develtopment

or you could stick linux on the box and do it that way

are you like buying a box for your own house?

Try going to ev1servers.net and just buy a dedicated there. get cpanel and everything will be easy.

See if I decide to host other people's site, become a web host I'll make more profit if I have my own server.

So that's like buying a remote server.
Think i'll use ev1 I'll look for some competitive prices first though.

not necessarily it cost quite a bit to get a high speed line to your house especially for just one server. id suggest getting a dedicated then maybe some colocated later.

You can get a good dedicated server from Rackshack for a decent price and after just setting up most of WHM myself from scratch (I knew alomst nothing about it), it is manageable if you are net savvy.

I wouldn't reccomend running a home based hosting service, because of the bandwith problem mostly, but there is something you need to remember that individuals that are looking for hosting now are aware of available features. most are looking for Cpanel/Fantastico set-ups and like the fact that the server that hosts there site is in a controlled environment...

If your going to do it do it for your self EV1's prices are good and the bandwidth allocations are second to none...

Take sometime and do a little more research, you will be happy with the end result

umm to do what you want isnt that easy if you've never had any experience....
You should rent a managed server from a hosting company, they'll do all the nasty work for you and all you'd have to mess with is just the control panel.

If you really want to start your own from scratch and rent an unmanaged server, you should find some tutorials/search threads off of http://www.webhostingtalk.com
