I made money by letting my domain expire at Net Sol !!!

I bought a domain last year for $5 and what it came down to was I was too lazy to change registers and renew so I let it expire and wrote it off. Also I didn't think it would sell for over $5 at NP's so I didn't want to waste my time. Well I received an email telling me they sold it for me (namejet sold it I believe) and I received my check this week. Do they do this for legal reasons?

We recently notified you that the registration period for your Network Solutions domain name had expired. As a benefit of having previously registered a domain name(s) with Network Solutions, you are eligible to receive a percentage of the net proceeds that were generated from the renewal and transfer of the domain name you chose not to renew. Maybe I should transfer over all my ones I deem to be crappy and let them expire there lol.

(bows) I am going to call this the lazy domainers way to make money lol. At first I thought it was some sort of scam but the check came today.

It taught me a lesson though. Do not let any domain drop without at least trying to sell it for break even (even if you only payed a couple bucks for it). I listed one last week here that I was going to let drop as well and it sold for $45- domaining....

imho all these drop companies should be paying ex-registrants a percentage of sales...places like tdnam are making a small fortune off the drops of their clients. I see no reason why a person owns a domain and possibly a site for years and when they let it drop the only person to benefit is the drop company or registrar.

Either allow the domain to be registered for reg fee or give a percentage of the auction price to previous owner.

That's my opinion at least and has been for years now.

If they offer this incentive i believe they could get a huge increase of new members using their service.
Not a bad idea either as network solutions would still be making a good return on every name sold.

More clients = more domains = more sales of dropped domains = more $$ for them

Its not new, it explains it all in NetSols terms - I wonder if the guy that dropped Laon.com got anything for it when it sold for $500249.00 at snapnames

If an expired domain name registration is not renewed during any grace period provided by us, pursuant to our Service Agreement, rather than delete the domain name registration, we may, in our sole discretion, renew and transfer the domain name registration to Network Solutions or to a third party on the customer’s behalf. This renewal and transfer process is called a “Direct Transfer.” We will not attempt to complete a Direct Transfer of a domain name registration after expiration if the customer to whom the domain name is registered has notified us by e-mail at backorderservice(at)networksolutions.com stating that he or she does not want us to proceed with such a transfer. In this case, the domain name registration will be deleted. A customer’s failure to notify us that they do not want us to complete a Direct Transfer constitutes that customer’s consent to the Direct Transfer. As described in our in our Service Agreement, customers are eligible to receive between fifteen and twenty percent (15-20%) of the Net Proceeds generated from the Direct Transfer.
