Anybody familiar with GParted software and the GParted project? Basically it's free software (free as in freedom) that's similar in it's features to Partition Magic.

A few years ago I became interested in the free software movement, and have since become a big fan and enthusiastic member of the free software community.

I was into domaining even longer, however, and when I saw a couple of years ago that GParted.org was available I registered it, and parked it.

For the last 2 years the domain was getting an average of 350 visits/month according to Sedo, and earning more than enough to pay for it's reg fee, but not big money. I was planing to develop it as a mini-site similar to www.GParted.net , which I'm sure would have much increased it's earnings.

But I just got the urge to give it to the project, as a way of saying thanks for the great software they make and share with the world. I know it's not such a big deal, but I thought I would post about it. I'm also curious if anyone else here has ever donated a domain name before, and hear their stories.

Very cool. It's great to see non-greedy domainers out there, especially when it's supporting free software or other non-profit organizations. :tu:

I've donated a few names, but nothing as cool as your story. B-)

good cause and intention.Q~ But what will they do with your domain?

Up until now the url for their project page has been http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ . The redirect they already have working, and maybe in the future they'll use GParted.org as their primary domain.

:tu: Does not have to be a *big deal* as such, little things are sometimes worth more.

Thanks. Yeah I thought it was really cool that they posted about it and thanked me on their news page.

Now, whenever I want, I can point people to that link http://gparted.sourceforge.net/news.php , and bam!, I got instant geek cred. So as Bill Murray's character said in Caddyshack... "So I got that goin' for me, which is nice."

Thanks. It made me feel good to give it. Still feels good. Don't worry though, I'm not gonna go crazy, and give all my domains away.
:hehe:

Very, very awesome of you. :tu:

The previous owner of WordPress.com also donated the domain name to WordPress.org and now they're profiting from it, I hope the previous owner gets a cut. :|
