.mobi I haven't seen the iPhone "It's not the mobile internet" commercial in a while.

I remember the days before the launch of iPhone, they kept playing that commercial with "it is not the mobile internet, it is just the internet". I haven't seen that commercial in over a week. The commercials I see now for the iPhone are not making that claim.

Has anyone else noticed this or am I just missing the "it's not the mobile internet" commercials?

If this is the case I wonder if someone on the iPhone marketing team realized it might be smarter to embrace the mobile internet and not fight it.

Your thoughts?

!!!!! Exactly my thoughts. Yes, it appears they MAY have pulled that ad. Personally, I think they are stupid if they don't embrace the "mobile" internet. Maybe they finally realized it, and will stop trying to shove that elephant through a mousehole, as Scandiman would say. :xf.love:

They did not pull it here in California. I saw it a few times on Sunday and once today. Discovery, History channel or something...

Thanks for the info, I don't have cable so I don't get those channels. It has not been on my local channels in San Diego. They are playing a lot of iPhone commercials but not the one in question.

was just mentioning that to a friend of mine NEO. Here in New York, I haven't seen that ad since the day of its release. :talk:

Thanks for the input. Has anyone besides robertjr seen the ad in question lately? I've seen another ad using the same background music but it is a totally different ad and doesn't mention the "mobile internet".

I too am in Cali and have seen it a couple times the past few days. I honestly forget which channels though.

Neo,

It seems to me that all of the spots have the same background music. All the ones I've seen, at least do. Just saw the "Calamari" spot just a second ago.

Apple promoting their iphone as "the real web" serves no purpose IMO -- if only to make customers wonder what exactly is this other web? Your average person has no clue what .mobi or the mobile internet is... Hell, a good 20% of people at my work (non-tech related) have no clue what Wikipedia is!

Apple would be much better off embracing whatever endusers decide to use in the end rather than attempting to bash a technology that the large majority of the public isn't even aware of. Judging by the amount of visitors I've received from Windows CE, Symbian OS, and iphones lately, I'd venture to say that new cellular internet customers are, at the very least, interested in what this mobile web is and are exploring it (~100 cellular visitors daily lately).

The fact is...it can do the full web, so why wouldn't they promote it...it's a major feature of their new phone.

That they would pull this ad so early in the campaign is a ridiculous claim.

I'm not saying that it works well...I'm just saying that if its a feature of their phone, they should promote it.

Why not promote it as both -- able to browse your favorite mobile sites and non-mobile (fancier word needed) ones? Apple's always big on features and this way it seems like you're getting more for your money; at least to me ;)

My take on it is that the mobile web has already been proven in Asia to be very popular, and it stands to reason that it will be elsewhere soon. The reason for that is clear: when you're on a mobile, you want your info FAST and QUICK and EASY.

Scrolling and zooming to get the 'real' web on a mobile phone in my opinion is a novelty that will wear off real quick.

Apple is shooting itself in the foot to not promote the mobile web as well, IMHO.

That's fine, but the ability to browse the mobile web is not a differentiator. I'm not a marketer, but if I were, I would want to create an ad that explains how my product stands above the competition.
That's where the "full web" or whatever term they use comes in. That's where they have the market beat. And even if it is not fast or not easy, it's still a feature of their phone that they do best.

And most importantly they are pushing this to consumers. Apple's marketing is making it "cool" to go mobile with the internet. It will spill over to other phones and more users. More mobile internet users = good for .mobi.

If anyone's gone to WAP sites or whatever web network their provider puts on their phone, they know exactly what that other web is and how much of a pain in the butt it is to deal with. I'd check email on my phone, but mail2web keeps having errors when I try to open individual emails! I know what you're saying, but I honestly don't think people are missing the point on this. It goes in conjunction with the YouTube commercial in that people can go to the same sites they know and love, more or less as they are on their PC, on their iPhone.

It's funny because I absolutely HATE Apple commercials (the YouTube commercial included), but have to give props to the one about not having a watered down or mobile internet simply because it makes me snicker a bit...I can just see a .mobier see that commercial, get worked up, turn off the TV and/or change the channel, throw the remote across the room and scream obscenities at Apple, and ironically, I hate those stupid "I'm an Apple" "And I'm a PC" commercials about that much...the most annoying commercials ever.

Hmmm, it was MORE of a pain in the butt for me to go to just about any full blown .com site. Took MINUTES to get there. It wasn't fun. Have you tried the iPhone?

I think once the content gets out there, mobile sites are definitely the way to go on mobiles, for many reasons.

In addition to the MAJOR pain in the *** reason that I mentioned above, I think zooming and scrolling to see your favorite .com site is a novelty that is going to quickly wear off with consumers.

Agree with many of your points.

The way I see it, .mobi sites will be the full internet for mobiles, with just as much functionality as the .com's when mobile browsers start adding features such as support for javascript/AJAX/Flash. It's just that the intended viewing areas will be smaller, so the UI will be designed differently.

.COM sites will auto-detect and downsize their UI.

.MOBI will have a down-sized UI to begin with.

Plenty of room for both extensions to coexist.

.MOBI just happens to be the new tract housing neighborhood in the suburbs. The old guard will say its too far to drive so they'll stay away...but the open minded will move to the suburbs and make a mint on their new "home". :sold:

Ditto. But I, like the rest that have seen it, reside in Cali. Seems to be localized to Cali only. Wouldn't be surprised if it finally gets pulled out. About time too. :p

Actually .mobiers knew that the Apple commercial would only hurt Apple the longer they kept playing that commercial, just see previous posts on this subject here in the forums. Far from bothering us- we actually laughed at such a claim because we knew better. ;)

Sorry...not buying this. What's one of the first things you want to see when you get your hands on an iPhone...the full Internet. That's one of the main reasons why there is a buzz.

I stand by my claim that Apple is not backing away from this feature.

This has all been just wishful thinking from those with mobi colored glasses.
