I have just been on GoDaddy.com and I was searching for some reg names.
I searched Casino and casino.co.uk came up as available so I purchased it on a 2 year registration.
It came up in my invoice saying that I had bought it, not backordered it I had actually bought the name!
I was delighted. But now it says that name is taken but the WHOIS is someone else and I do not have the name in my account.
What the hell has happened??

Well, i hate to give the bad news but actually you didn't get it. It happened to me last week, when i was scouting for names at Moniker and i've seen that Backpacking.net was free. I paid for it, but the registration failed because the name was already registered. You will get a refund.

That's crap!!
Why did they say I had bought it?
They said they were going to try to get me the name for 72 hours.
I am so annoyed about this!!

I'm sorry, it's just a registration bug. It's worth the thrill, though :)

haha I was thinking I'd just made myself a fortune as well!
I'm complaining about this; there's no way they are getting away with out paying me compensation!

that really sucks man. Those would have been some nice hand registrations. :(

That would ruin my year :(

Yes, you would have certainly hit the jackpot (pun intended) -- but of course Casino.anything has been registered for a long time...

But I know where you're coming from...the same thing has happened to me in the past. I suppose it's always worth attempting the reg anyway just in case...weird things happen...

Sorry dude, but, fill in the blank.

If it sounds TOO good to be true, ______________!

What happens is that Godaddy and other registrars will lose connections with the Registries. This used to happen quite a bit with .info. When they dont have a response from the registry if the domain is available, they take your money and will attempt to register the domain name when they get connection back to the registry. The problem is, like in this case, you attempted to register a domain name that obviously had already been registered.

BTW - Did you really think you actually had regged this domain name? Common sense should have told you that "This cant be right"...

Unfortunately

That's a common problem. Better to check with 2 registrars to see if name is truly available.

Do you really think casino.co.uk would be available? Inputting the web address in your browser would have revealed that it is a developed site.

But hey...what a rush you got huh. Better than any drug methinks.

Unfortunately...what goes up must come down:)

Hand Regging a domain like casino.co.uk in these times is next to impossible. Try to check with atleast 2 different whois registries before paying.

Probably you are right. But then i still live with the over optimistic feeling that sometime when you get extremely lucky you might be able to handreg such a name. :sold:

Or better yet, check directly at the respective registry first to better determine availability. It's not 100% full-proof, but is far more reliable than checking through a registrar.

For .UK, check Nominet UK

For .COM and .NET, check VeriSign Whois Search from VeriSign, Inc.

For .ORG, check .:: Public Interest Registry ::. (the whois search box is part way down on right-hand side)

For .INFO, check WHOIS | .INFO

For .US, check NeuStar - whois.us

All of the above TLDs can also be queried directly (note: the whois server address for many is different; ie. for .org it's whois.pir.org) using a whois lookup tool, such as Cyberkit.

I"ve had this happen to me before before a couple years ago. I was so excited, thought I had a hand-reg'd premium name, then I had my funds refunded. Mine was with a gambling domain name too.
