I am having issues with Dotster and Netfirms

Hi all, I am a newbie. I have a few domains between dotster and netfirms that I bought sometime last year. But for whatever reason I have never been able to update the contact info for the domains, because I always get an error.

Now however I want to transfer these domains but I can't because the confirmation email goes to the previous owner email address. I contact support and they tell me I need send business documents, etc to help.

Is this a normal thing for these 2 registrars or am I just unlucky? Can anyone advise me here?
