Huge jump in Whois queries

I have a domain for which there used to be 30-40 monthly whois queries as per my godaddy account. In past one week there have been 361 queries and in this month till today Nov 13 there have been 560 queries.

What could be the reason for this sudden jump ? It is a very old .com regged in 1996.

Thanks,

What's the expiry on it?

Also, what's the domain itself?

It's hard to gauge why interest is occurring without knowing the big data points.

Did you recently put it up for sale on some platform or list it somewhere?
People might be checking it up due to that.
Or maybe you have an enduser ;)

It is regged for many years.

Thanks to all of you.

It sounds like you definitely have some interest on someone's end.

When I had a spike in WhoIS queries on some "eco" names, it turns out that it was because somebody was looking to sell me some similar names. I got an email offering me "ecoblahblah.com" since I owned several related names.

However, the spike in traffic was nothing like yours. I hope for you it means something good is just around the corner! :)

How do you find out how many WhoIs queries there are on a name?

GoDaddy is the only registrar I know of that makes that information available to customers. If your domains are registered with them, see this thread for instructions on how to view it.

Strange, though it could simply be as simple as the GoDaddy whois link for that domain is ranking high in one or more of the popular search engines - seen that before. The other explanations others wrote are just as plausible.

However, when a domain gets more activity than usual ... be it sales inquiries, increased traffic, whois lookups (check DomainTools to see if it's getting cached there nearly everyday), that's often a sign something is happening ... could be nothing, but it could be your domain has recently changed status and/or its expiration date is near...

Rambling on ... check the registry whois - for .COM that would be VeriSign - do NOT use any third party whois, check the registry directly to be sure the expiration date, registrar, and domain statuses are correct; verify that nothing has unexpectedly changed. And keep a close eye on the domain for awhile.
