Good day all!

How do you guys feel about "HowTo" keyword domains? ie. HowToFlyAKite.com

For use with: Informative content, videos, etc...

Worth it or no?

Have a great day!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
GoDaddyGoDaddy
I don't know if they are worth much, depends on the idea for the webpage... couple of those could be used for "self help" books/sites... but the availability of the "HowTo + single verb" domains with .com is ... from 1050 different verbs ... 420 is available and 630 taken...

I just registered my very first HowTo domain a few weeks ago (feels like yesterday) Creation Date: 2012-04-12.

This is almost certainly a sign that it's a bad idea.

I like them, just so long as its not too obscure with no search volume or no interest. I would say there is resale value for the top names like How to talk to women, or How to play the guitar, for example.

Along those same lines, here is another domain name starter:

WhatIsTheBest[FillInTheBlank].com

Typing these kinds of queries into Google or Ask.com as separate submissions will return suggestions of the most popular questions. With the evolving sophistication of search engines to parse keywords and understand context, I believe more people will be typing longer inquiries - not shorter - as we move into the future.

Of course, the following words are all fair game for keyword based questions relating to generic products, services and/or other info:

Who, What, Where, When, Why and How

A few dotCOMs I've reg'd over the years:

WhatIsTheBestDigitalCamera

WhatIsTheBestLaptop

WhatIsTheBestInvestment

WhatToInvestIn

WhatIsTheBestMortgage

WhatIsTheBestCellPhone

WhatAreMunicipalBonds

WhatAreMoneyMarketAccounts

WhatCausesEarthquakes

WhatIsSocialism

WhatAmericaMeansToMe

HowABillBecomesALaw

HowCanILoseWeightFast

HowToBuyGoldCoins
HowToPickACareer

As the net becomes more mobile, I cannot agree with longer will be better, if you want to talk about asking Siri a question then longer is fine, but as mobile usage grows and grows the shorter the better imo, I don't think most people want to be typing in 34 character domains on a mobile phone.

The other varieties are not bad but for me not on par with How TO .com domains.

Most people will be typing (or asking) a question - not entering a domain name. This is all about exact match and SEO. As far as typing 34 characters at one time into a mobile device, I guess that would explain why text messaging (and spinoffs like Twitter) never caught on... :hehe:

Btw, thanks to this thread, I just reg'd the following two dotCOM domain names:

WhoWhatWhereWhenWhyAndHow
(25 characters)

WWWWWAH (7 characters, but much easier to type)

One last comment: equity78, your quote, above, is one of the best reasons I've seen for why dotTEL (Telnic.org) may be a real sleeper. Who wants to remember 1-800 (or was it 866 or 877?) plus two more random digits followed by 4Taxi (painstakingly translated into its numeric equivalent), when you could simply enter 4Taxi.tel on your mobile device and ask for a pick up? For more on this concept, search the following keywords: "dotTel Has Legs".

.

For The Record: ThreeStooges.com is only 3 characters. ;)

Once voice search becomes the new rage it will not matter ...........not good news for the typos i suspect

I think there will even be number presets where you just say 'one' and end up at google or the preset site of choice

That's why I picked up the dotCOM domain, Universal // Communicator. All voice, text, gesture, signing, etc. translated from any desktop, PDA, cellphone or mobile device incorporating real time, on-the-fly translation from any communications medium to any other.

Not just a translator, a communicator!

Seems like a good school of thought when you consider how fast gadgets are evolving
