One, it's called a TLD, and Two, I have no idea, I think it's long process that ICANN has something do do with.

I don;t think just anyone can. You have to own a country like Tokelau for instance with their .tk domains or show that you can reach a certain quota of domains before you even get a TLD.

1. Officially, you can't unless you apply to ICANN, pay $50k and wait for nothing.
2. See above
3. Unofficially, you can create anything you want that will need a special plug-in. But that's not surfing the Internet, that's messing around in your kitchen.

There is no point in creating a TLD that no one knows exists. And to market it so that htey would find out about it and then to convince them to use/buy such a domain with such a TLD would cost you mor than you can imagine. And it would probably never pan out. The TLD that are available now are already getting outta hand, some are still ot used much. The market is saturated with TLDs at this point with only a few actually being worth your while registering/developing.

Artificial scarcity is getting to be a joke.

The ccTLDs are long into the act;

.US, .CN, .IN, ( .EU ) ... (( .UK? ))

And IDNs :guilty: sigh.

Then the upcoming sTLDs ;

.MOBI, .JOBS http://www.icann.org/announcements/announcement-13dec04.htm

Yeah.

The great drop catchers of yore, UltimateSearch (Yun Ye) and BuyDomains, managed to grab great .COM names, and I mean GREAT NAMES, for less than $100 each in the good ol' days of exclusive RRP connections and Snapnames $49 secured registrations.

Today, some silly late-comer wannabes who are in late comer panic pay like $4k to $30k to get non-descript unbrandable names that could have been obtained for less than $100 2 years back, all for the blind sake of manipulated Overture scores and this idea that the "Internet is growing". Well, so are the Search Engines. *knock knock* Hellooo... anyone home?

Why do you think Ults is ditching?

Timing is everything.

Unless you have at least $100k to invest, and probably two more times that in startup and lauch cost don't even think further. Even if you have the cash and expertise, it's a long shot.

There are some "fakes" out there let you "create" your own, but there will probably be all of 500 people in the world who could see anything you made using it.
