Does anyone here know anything about creating a TLD? I am trying to research on how to go about starting a TLD. such as a .com or .net, but a private one.

What is the process?

Has anyone ever written a charter? How would I go about it?

What would the investment be?

Does anyone know of any related sites that I can find info about this on?

I guess ICANN is the organization that I will need to contact in order to start my own extension, but any further information anyone could possibly provide me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Thanks a lot for the post, that was very helpful.

I thought I had read that the application fee was $50,000 USD, but I thought that was back in 97 when the internet was new. Geesh, thats a pretty penny to come up with.

That is kind of depressing information, because the domain extension I have wouldn't get turned down, I am certain. Coming up with that kind of money to fund such a thing is the real let down. Bummer, but Thank You.

new.net is the cheap route for many. In both senses of the word.

I guess it depends on what you mean by a "private one". If you mean one that anyone in the world can access without doing anything different, then you probably need a couple hundred thousand dollars or more (application, setup, marketing, servers, software or service provider, staff, travel to ICANN meetings, etc), some friends in the right places, lots of time to wait, a very good business plan, and lots of luck.

If you mean a private one that only your friends can access, you could probably do it pretty inexpensively by creating your own private root. Only those who used your DNS servers could access it. However, there would be virtually no way to make money off it. It would really not be so much internet as it would be an intranet.

Essentially new.net does this and has tried to get ISP's to make changes to "see" their private TLD's in a public way. If a well backed and financed company like new.net can't make it work publicly and financially, it probably isn't worth trying.

You could take the easy route: start a UN-recognized country on some island in the Pacific... ;)
