If I wanted to build a site that had a static home page..and on the sides links to main pages..and maybe sub pages
what kind of program would I use. It does not seem like WorkPress would be a good choice or would it?

Thanks!

I assume you have no knowledge of HTML, so I suggest using a WYSIWYG ("What You See Is What You Get") editor. I strongly advise Dreamweaver, but Frontpage/Expressions from Microsoft should also do the trick if need be. You can google "free web templates" and download them, open them in the WYSIWYG editor and then edit the files there directly.

if you happen to DO know html/css/etc, you can just use notepad. i suggest notepad++ if you'll be doing code editing.

WYSIWYG is not a program, it's an acronym for "What you see is what you get", and it relates to the kind of programs where you build a page and what you see in it will be what you will see in a browser (at least in theory). If you installed wordpress, simply go to your dashboard, create new posts and that's it

To download a WYSIWYG editor (it's an acronym), get Dreamweaver (google it, it's by adobe). That can be used to edit html files.

However, if you installed Wordpress, you can use the admin panel they provide, most of the time found at www.site.com/wp-admin/ assuming you didn't change any settings when installing.

Personally i use Textpad - best program ever made IMO - for hand codeding that is.

Though as your newbie as stated above your best bet is Dreamweaver (a WYSIWYG) thought its not free.

I believe it currently sells at $399 USD.

You can download the Trial of Dreamweaver here for free
