i just want to know the best experience on promoting a web site idea in 1 week or earlier.

i heard some chatroulette guy or other get reached over 500k people within days.

First of all, you have to develop content of your site. Now SEO is very difficult now, you have to do quality work to get result from SEO.

Quality link building needed with quality content regularly if you are in competitive niche.

WOW there are so many tried and true ways, below are just a few

1. Good SEO practices, having your keywords placed and ready is key
2. Forum marketing at targeted forums based on your niche. If you answer questions properly you can become a valid professional in your niche
3. Blog commenting, not as good as forum but a nice way to drive targeted traffic.
4. Provide a Ebook or something branded with a link back to your site and allow giveaway right, let it go viral.
5. Yahoo Answers, again become the expert.
6. Someone above said this already, but Social media is HUGE.

I do wonder what type of traffic he got. 500K in just a few days is splendid if they were real (human) and targeted traffic.

I agree with MrCat that it is very surprising to get 500k real traffic within few days. In order to get real traffic you need right SEO. Make sure that all of your website content is original.

That's what i was thinking too...

Unless you have huge budget sitting around, there is no way to get this big traffic in just few days...

These days getting 100s of traffic is very difficult task from Search Engine...Experienced are stuck about what to do and what not to do due to changes in algorithm of Google SEO.

For some SEO advice, i'd like to tell you to ask for help in the SEO section. You can also search through some threads and ask questions if you don't understand what something is or does...etc

Also check out the SEO Tip of the day sticky thread. It's updated almost daily with fresh blog posts relating to SEO stuff.

For marketing, you should make sure that you have some social buttons on your homepage and other pages on your web hosting site. Also if you have a company blog, add some social buttons on there. If you do have a WordPress blog, let us know because i can mention some basic plugins/SEO ones to get the blog SEO friendly.

Have you tried writing blog posts about the Web hosting industry? Seems you have a good knowledge of this and also servers since you work for a Server company. Doing guest blog posts on blogs related to your niche will get you some targeted traffic if they like the blog post you typed up.

You can also create threads on webmaster forums like this one announcing your web hosting packages and stuff. Check out our Web hosting section in the marketplace. We have hosting people promoting there business in there. Be sure to read the rules in this section before creating a thread.

Add a link to your signature on all forums that you join. You can get free traffic this way by posting in forums hosting sections answering questions and helping figuring out hosting problems someone may have. Who knows, they could switch to your host because you know what you are doing. I got to go right now and hopefully i'll remember to come back with better advice.

500K visits within days for a new website is unbelievable. May be as 'Nick' mentioned you might read some sales page.

I do not think any SEO strategy will work just within one week. May be he used PPC or Social Media Marketing to bring traffic to his website. Or else he may wrote some trendy topic and marketed the page in Facebook or Twitter very cleverly.

Well, can see it for a video, maybe a Justin Bieber video or the Royal wedding or something of same caliber, But I can't see it for a site.

Best suggestion (from me) is to forget the dream of having a site that get thousands of visitors...stay in reality and try to build a site that get "tens" of views at first and develope it to get more.

The story you told is just unbelievable and I think its just a dream cause such things neither happen nor it is a good practice, but its true that you can improve you traffic very quickly and that can be possible after following all the best pratices at the same time such as :
SEO strategy
Content marketing at same time
Social media campaigns
and Paid advertisement on social networks along with Google networks

I would say try to optimize your site properly in terms of URL structure, Meta tags, content and so on. Later comes the off page SEO. In Off page, you can do social bookmarking, directory submission, blog commenting, article submission and forum submission. Also now a days social networking site is booming hence you can try to make an account in those sites and then can do the promotion for free. All the above techniques are for free promotion you can also choose for paid services to make promotion but not counted much in Google. Choice is yours
