I know there is a resource that does this, but I can't remember where its at. Can anybody help me with this?

I want to see the domains a person owns by searching their name.

Thanks.

Have you tried http://whois.org/?
unless the domian is privately registered..it should show the owner.

Briguy,

Thanks for the help, but I know the persons name. I want to look up what domains they own using their name.

Did you try domain tools? Pricey but it seems I've seen this feature on their list.

Unfortunately their report costs 68$ (with the name I tried)... Are there any free alternatives or maybe a bit less expensive?

there was before but i forgot something like "who's your neighbor?" but still you need to have at least one domain known owned by the owner or the ip address, if owner is on dedicated server then you get the list of domains.

Domaintools is perhaps the most comprehensive tool. Shame they cost to much. However its worth it if your looking to aquire a high priced domain or likewise.

Thanks for the effort guys. If anybody is looking for a business idea this might be something. If you can develop the software and charge a lot less, I'll wager you make a nice sum.

i think you need to have some monetary connections of some sort with registrars to do that, if not, they will just block your domain.

You can use Google to get a handful of them, it is by no means comprehensive though. Plug this in the search box:

site:whois.domaintools.com "search term"

Replace search term with their name, then try their email, their street address, etc. Not great, but better than nothing and its free.

Another thing you can try to do is locate one of their domains at an aftermarket like Sedo, sometimes one of their listings will link to their portfolio.

all you have to do is download the zone file of the tld you want. .com, .net etc. Then do a search on the name of th applicant you want. It is only a few gigs of data and a few hundred million domains to review (:)) It is tough to get. Maybe to google on their name and see if they have a portfolio site out there.

thanks for that search parameter on google.

here's another tool
http://www.aboutus.org/Special:AboutUsSearch?q=firstname+lastname
only problem if they sold the domain to someone else still it's there and also dropped domains can be seen not that updated, just to get one domain from the person is worth looking using other tools.

http://network-tools.com/default.asp?prog=dnsrec&host=DOMAIN.COM
reveals the email of the owner in txt/ascii format very dangerous for domain owner to get spammed.

try the finger it's an old protocol
http://stuff.mit.edu/cgi/finger

finally back to google.com type "firstname+lastname"

Yes because extracting specifics from a large amount of data has been such a stumbling block so far.

Are these TLD zone files publicly available? If they are, I could write an extraction tool pretty easily.

You have to fill out an application with VeriSign, and if approved, they'll send you a username and password to their FTP site to download it. The agreement is here:

http://www.verisign.com/stellent/groups/public/documents/other_documents/002493.doc

However, contrary to popular belief, the COM zone file does not contain the whois information, so it won't help you with this. COM and NET have thin whois, meaning each registrar is responsible for keeping (and serving) ownership records for the domains they control. The data is not stored in one place.

The way DomainTools does it is just about every time someone searches whois on their site, they cache it in a database. That helps with their Whois history tool, and was repackaged as a way to look up all domains owned by a single entity. It isn't as easy as it sounds, and requires an absurd amount of overhead.

Michael is correct. You can only get Registrar, Expiry and Creation Date, and Domain Status from the .com and .net registry zones. That is why whois info doesn't always look the same. It sounds like this person doesn't want to publish the sites he owns making it much more diffucult. I would try google to see if you can do some forensic work on your own. Good Luck
